MACDONALD: The Slippery Slope Just Got More Slippery

If you want slippery slopes, we’ve got around 260 pieces of content on them, covering a multitude of subjects, though mostly assisted suicide. The warning should sound familiar. If you give the government the power and control it needs to euthanize the inconvenient, it will. Many nations have tried this, and several US states have, too. Opinions vary, but two things in particular should scare you, hopefully into NOT letting any state manage death.

A majority of those euthanized tend to be on public health benefits, and nations with socialized medicine keep finding more reasons to kill people. Remember, it is always cheaper to kill them than to treat them, so they will look for more reasons to kill them.

Canada has quickly become the woke leader in medically managed executions. Search Canada + assisted suicide, and you’ll get 60-80 hits on our pages. Story after story points to a slippery slope, but Canada isn’t done sliding.

Euthanasia was originally legalized in Canada under the guise of being for mentally competent adults, who are capable of consenting and who freely “choose.” Euthanasia by advanced request undermines these basic principles.

Euthanasia by advance request means that a person, while competent, legally declares their “wish” to be killed, and if the person becomes incompetent, the person could then be killed, even though the person is not capable of consenting. Therefore, euthanasia by advance request is euthanasia without consent.

Who among us trusts the government enough to think it would never fabricate either a competent request or a diagnosis of incompetence when it needed them? Euthanasia by advanced request is a blank check to remove someone from the world because you can, and oh look, they were an organ donor too.

If you don’t have enough concern, how about this?

[A] person who is approved to die by euthanasia based on an advanced request, who becomes incompetent, will lose their right to change their mind.

If opting in for euthanasia is like gender, you can change your mind four times before lunch, and everyone on the planet, most of whom have never met you and could never guess your preferred pronouns, has to not just accept it but celebrate it.

Competence is clearly irrelevant, and government suppresses people’s rights all the time. We have a judicial ladder you have to climb to get them back, but once they’ve killed you, you’re dead, and being part of Western Civilization and its history of placing a great deal of value on human life is no barrier.

This is what happened in the Netherlands with the “coffee euthanasia” death where an incompetent woman, who had previously requested euthanasia, resisted during the euthanasia. The doctor responded by putting a sedative in the woman’s coffee, but the woman continued to resist, so the doctor had her family hold her down as the doctor completed the lethal poison injection.

Whether parliament or legislature, Western law-making bodies have increasingly embraced execution at both ends of the arc of life, and a good bit in the middle.

There’s nothing compassionate about making excuses to justify killing an innocent person, regardless of their medical condition, who has decided they want to live, because it’s more convenient for the family or the state.
