It claimed that she had given consent despite that seeming impossible given her disabilities and her Catholic faith, which had previously been cited for previous refusals. Canada wanted to kill her, but the family kept saying no.
Approximately two months before her death, Stegemann was asked about Medical Assistance in Dying.
According to her family’s public statement, she “clearly stated that she did not wish to pursue it.”
As a devout Christian, she said the practice conflicted with her personal beliefs and faith. She wanted to die naturally.

While the granddaughter (who had power of attorney) was away on a 10-day vacation, facility staff held private discussions with Stegemann about MAiD without informing her family or any advocate. The family was never given a clear answer about who initiated those conversations, a serious concern given Stegemann’s diminished capacity, severe hearing impairment—she was completely deaf in her left ear and had very limited hearing in the right—and frequent periods of lethargy and unresponsiveness.
When the formal assessment occurred on July 6 and 7, the family described Stegemann’s sudden alertness as anomalous after days of near-unresponsiveness.
The people responsible for her long-term care declared her competent, claimed she had given consent, and orchestrated her execution, ignoring both patient and family wishes.
This is not some rogue accident; it is a product of the permission structures erected by the government and state-managed health care system to address costs.
It is a short leap from a culture that allows this or has been forced to accept it to a broadening of the definition of the word “costs.”
It costs us money to police dissidents, career criminals, political opponents, and so on until any problem that might infringe on the State’s ability to do whatever it wants to whomever it wants is resolved, after which it becomes a thing people know about but don’t talk about.
China has assisted suicide. The agents pick you up off the street and remove your organs on the way to the hospital. All the paperwork is in order, and if you object, you’re probably next.
Some people will believe that medically assisted dying is compassionate, and maybe it is. But the ideological descendants of progressive American eugenicists still believe the government can create the perfect society, and the more power they get, the less shy they are about what that means or what to do with people who get in the way.
