Today on the Morning Update, instead of talking about Democrat or government scams, we’re tuning up a new one. The Free Piano Scam. Why? I keep getting emails offering me a free piano. No one in my house plays, and we don’t do the same either. Here’s a quick look at this one.

Slightly different kind of thing today. Normally the scams we talk about involve the government, which is the biggest scam of all. Today we’re gonna do something different because I keep getting emails from different people telling me that they hope I’m doing fine and they’re looking for somebody to buy a piano.

I hope you’re doing well. I wanted to check in regarding the message I sent earlier, which I don’t recall, about a Yamaha piano that belonged to my friend’s late husband. This instrument holds profound sentimental value for her, and she’d love it to find a new home with someone who will cherish it as much as her late husband did.
She’d be delighted to share its history, condition, or other details. If you’re curious, thank you for your time. Any suggestions would mean a lot, with gratitude, Evangeline.

Trust you’re doing fine. I want to check in regarding the message I sent earlier about a Yamaha piano. This is from somebody else. Different email. Same story. Anyway, I’m like, what a neat scam. I gotta go look this up. So I did.
It’s called The Free Piano Scam. What happens is people reach out and say, Hey, mostly students, professors, musicians, we’ve got this piano, and it seems to be a Yamaha piano, and they want very much for it to go to a good home. And wouldn’t that be great? Do you know anybody?
Well, that’s not so much the scam, but this is. Once you say yes, I’ll take the piano, or I found a home for the piano, my dog is bugging me. Hang on.
Cosmo, wait.
They send you a separate email from a company that pretends to be a shipping company, demanding upfront freight charges for the piano. Now some people would be like, Well, hey, a couple hundred bucks in freight for a free piano, that sounds like a great deal. Well, it’s of course a scam.
So, according to CybersecurityNews.com, the ongoing piano advance-fee fraud scam has netted over $900,000 in a single Bitcoin wallet by tricking recipients, often students and faculty, into paying upfront delivery fees for non-existent free pianos. Leveraging free mail accounts, the actors impersonate shipping companies and collect personal information from victims across payment methods like Zelle, Cash App, and Cryptocurrency, with varying email content and contact details. Multiple threat actors likely utilize the same wallet for various concurrent scams given the high transaction volume and diversity. So it’s a lot like the government. The campaign is likely operated in part from a Nigerian-based identified perpetrator.

There’s always lots of scams; everything’s a scam. My family asks me about weird texts they get; I just yell, it’s a scam. Guess it probably is.
Most companies who are legitimate don’t do business that way. You know that, I know that, but it’s always nice to be reminded because you know, free piano is a free piano, right?
No, it’s not.
