Welcome to a special Saturday, July eighteenth, two thousand and twenty-six edition of the morning update.
As with the last one on a Saturday, I did it because on Friday I said I’d talk to you tomorrow, and here I am, talking to you tomorrow. About what? GLAAD. The Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. They aren’t very happy.
Their reliable propagandists in the entertainment industry in Hollywood aren’t casting enough alphabet characters with as much vigor as they did in 2024. According to the Rainbow Mafia, films with queer characters dropped eight percent from twenty-eight point five to twenty point four, and of the nineteen animated family films in twenty twenty-five.
Not a single one of them had any LGBTQ characters, or did they? What if they were there, but it just wasn’t important to the story? I mean, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen lots of movies where the characters’ sexuality is irrelevant, where it would actually detract from the story and maybe even the plot, and it becomes a distraction and can diminish the project if you force it into the storyline.
That’s no excuse if you’re the not-so-glad GLAAD. If they aren’t loud and proud, it doesn’t count, especially trans characters, which strikes me as particularly odd. If the goal is for a man to be so completely like a woman, isn’t the goal for us to accept them at face value? Isn’t that what they want? To be a woman?
They have rules for the entertainment industry, which, by the way, none of the 225 films in 2025 had, by which I mean trans characters. Quote: They have what they call a three-part Vito Russo test named for the CLAAD co-founder and author of the book, The Celluloid Closet.
Characters can’t be solely or predominantly defined by sexual orientation or gender identity. They need a deeper personality. They need more dimension. Next, the character must matter to the plot, that their removal would have a significant effect. They can’t just be there simply to provide colorful commentary, paint urban authenticity, or set up a punchline. Finally, the LGBTQ character’s story must not be outwardly offensive, avoids defaulting to well-known tropes or stereotypes.
The things that GLAAD expects basically erase the ability of anyone, including GLAAD, to have any idea if the character is trans, queer, or straight. Not without adding in those stereotypes and all the other things they claim they don’t want to see. You would literally just have people reading lines.
Or do they mean they want actual trans actors as opposed to trans characters? But again, if they’re really good actors, you wouldn’t really know. You’d have absolutely no idea. So I understand why GLAAD isn’t so GLAAD, why they’re not so happy. Because they basically painted themselves into a corner. There aren’t enough gay, queer, trans characters, but if you follow their guidelines,
The only way you’d know is if they violated their guidelines. It’s an interesting conundrum.
By the way, biology and gravity are both immutable. Feel free to test them both. Just don’t ask GLAD to help you figure out how to do it.
