I’ve done this more than once, and at the same time, not nearly enough. When something unflattering (ish) happens in the rightosphere, the media grabs its microphones and shoves them in the faces of every Republican they can find to ask them about it. On the left, not so much – if at all.
I can’t recall any media asking about ICE out folks defending child molesters, rapists, and murderers from Border Patrol officers executing federal warrants in the interior (or anywhere else). Graham Platner might be the exception after the latest accusations, but those don’t count. I predicted months ago that Janet Mills would drop out so that her campaign wouldn’t be accused when the dirt they all knew about surfaced. It was coming out. He would go down. They knew it, and Janet needed deniability, and the Maine Democrat party has the power to replace Platner at will… probably with Janet Mills. Otherwise, the double standard is nearly ironclad and bulletproof.
The media doesn’t ask Democrats to comment on awkward or uncomfortable things their ” constituency” does. We do. We bring them up regardless of whose side, but today’s homework assignment comes from the Left.
A new YouGov survey found Democrats are more likely to view the Black Lives Matter flag positively than the American flag, with 74 percent expressing a very or somewhat positive opinion of the BLM flag compared with 72 percent for the U.S. flag.
If a Democrat door-knocks your house, ask them about this, but you don’t have to wait for that, since it may never happen. Emails, phone calls, social media asks.
“Do you agree with the majority of Democrats in this poll?” (a timely question given other reporting about how the left feels about Old Glory).
If they don’t, then it might be worth asking how their base got such a negative opinion and what they, if elected, would do (absent the obvious idea that it’s only America when Democrats win elections).
If they dare to suggest the BLM flag has any sort of superior value in any context, this would be a good time to ask about the adoration of career criminals like George Floyd or how BLMs influence resulted in the destruction of black businesses and lives and policies like defunding the police, which increased crime in black neighborhoods.
Or how the leaders appear to have been running a grift, absconding with vast sums, some of which they used to buy a rather pricey home in an exclusive, mostly white neighborhood?
I’m sure the Lefties polled were gratuitous consumers of what passes for news in progressive media spaces, but that’s no excuse either. Politics is downstream from culture, and the culture on the left hates an idea about the flag that the left curated. It lionized BLM while ignoring the consequences surrounding its protests. The candidates, politicians, elected officials, activists, and BLM are all complicit in the short- and long-term harm to black lives that followed, as well as the widespread ignorance of the progressive population about these harms.
BLM improved a few resumes and enriched a few pockets, but on the whole, its rise and prominence have been detrimental to people of color.
If the flag representing those values and customs is viewed more positively, then your party has a problem, and you need to take responsibility for it. But since the media won’t do its job, we have to do it for them.
