I confess to being a bit disappointed. After Trump floated the flag-burning ban, we did not see a rise in the activity (not yet). Not because I want to see people burning flags, but because that’s what leftists do. Trump comes out for or against something, and the Deranged left leaps to the opposing position. It is a truth as old as Trump presidencies. Criminals, gangs, drug traffickers, child molesters, rioters, low-wage work, it’s a long list.
And the running joke has long been ‘when will Trump do something to get Democrats to defend the Second Amendment?’
Trump’s DOJ just did that. It broke all over the internet yesterday evening.
The U.S. Justice Department is considering proposals to prevent transgender people from buying guns, U.S. media reported on Thursday. ..
“The DOJ is actively evaluating options to prevent the pattern of violence we have seen from individuals with specific mental health challenges and substance abuse disorders. No specific criminal justice proposals have been advanced at this time,” a Justice Department spokesperson said when asked about the media reports.
Mulling rule, considering ban, weighing effort, reportedly considering; these are the headlines that all end with banning or restricting trans people from owning firearms.

It’s not going to happen, and not just because it’s crazy and unconstitutional to ban an entire group of law-abiding people, no matter how crazy you think they are, from their Second Amendment rights. And I doubt anyone at DOJ is serious. Ever since Trump Derangement Syndrome became a thing, I think they’ve been looking for a way to get Democrats to defend Second Amendment rights.
“This is an overtly discriminatory civil rights violation. Trans people have the same legal rights as other Americans — end of story. There are lots of good reasons to keep certain people from owning guns. Being trans isn’t one of them,” wrote Democratic congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh.
There will be more as liberals in the media label the Trump administration as gun grabbers in an effort to create fissures or find division on the right. And it might work for a while. I saw plenty of center-right comments on how crazy this is and how it stands no chance of holding up in court. And lots of center-left stories are diving into the deep end on the Republican gun-grabbing narrative.
Gun-grabbing lefties are complaining about gun-grabbing? Excellent! I’m opposed to that, too, but have they forgotten where they stand, especially on Red Flag laws, mental health, and firearms ownership?
Therein lies the obvious beauty and nuance. While it gives plenty of Dems a chance to massage their own messaging away from the gun grabber label as we hurtle toward the 2026 midterms, that puts them at odds with decades of hysterical party messaging and their pro-gun-grabbing base, none of whom will likely know how to agree with gun grabbing, especially in this context.
Be particularly aware of how Left-Wing leaders attempt to move in and around the narrative, or don’t (we may need more popcorn).

Marlow said, “So, test the Democrats with that, let’s bring it up, let’s see what they say, because we don’t let everyone with mental illness get guns, so let’s add that to the group and let’s see what they say. Because they’re in between a rock and a hard place, they can say, no, we want the trans to be able to get assault rifles and so then it shows that they are really cool with people having assault rifles. Or they can say, we subscribe, we’re in on it.”
You mean people who may be on the kinds of drugs you give to people with mental health issues? There’s no absence of precedent, established by the Democrat party, for a cautionary confiscation of firearms. Felons can’t own them, nor may certain drug users (marijuana, linked to forms of psychosis and mental breaks). Whether you agree with any of that or not, it’s out there, and Democrats are the undisputed cheerleaders for gun-grabbing.
And now they have to figure out what to do with this.
Trump and his DOJ can, at any point, say, someone brought it up, we looked at it, and it’s unconstitutional, and the gun folks are happy, but the foundation for Red Flag laws, as does the ongoing Hoplophobia over scary black rifles (AR-15s), takes a hit. As do any Democrats who either fumble the long ball with poor messaging or who refuse to stand up for transgender rights.
It’s brilliant.
