Now THIS Is Weird

Democrats think JD Vance is weird—I mean, really weird. And what started with Vance has since been attached—by the chattering class propagandist punditry—to the Trump campaign and Republicans in general. It is a 2024 version of deplorable, with a whimsical twist. But is it any less offensive, and does it open them up to attack? Vance credibly represents the interests of millions of poor working-class people. These are people who were struggling to get by before the Biden-Harris economy bludgeoned the value of the few dollars they had. Are they weird?

You know what’s weird? Peace. Peace is weird. Rising wages and real job growth are weird. A government that doesn’t surveil its citizens is weird. Low crime is weird, and the closer you get to places of prolonged progressive governance, it is not just weird but extremely rare. Affordable housing is weird. A nation whose government does not fearmonger it constantly is weird. Cheap gas and groceries are also very weird. The FBI not raiding citizens’ houses over process crimes would be weird.

To be able to start poor and blaze your individual and likely very different path to success is weird.

It’s weird not to be lied to by government experts (about flu and injections and laptops – or a president’s competency), and it’s weird to be concerned about the generational harm caused by the ever-increasing national debt. Caring about the impact of unrestricted illegal entry on inner-city Americans is weird. Public schools that teach children to read or do math are weird. Prosecuting theft is weird. Deporting illegals who commit crimes is weird. Caring about a robust and capable military is weird. Thinking parents should not be arrested at school board meetings because they object to educators grooming their children is weird. Not wanting to pay for foreign wars when American cities are falling apart is weird. Wishing to protect midwestern teenage girls from illegal alien rapists and murders is weird. Objecting to the drugging or neutering of children is weird.

The founding of America was very weird, as was the unique meritocracy it created. Its ability to lift more people out of poverty than any nation on Earth or in human history was also weird. Free speech, the right to self-defense, freedom from illegal search and seizure, and putting power in the hands of the people and not the government are very weird and increasingly rare in human history.

America is weird. Americans are weird. True freedom is weird, by which I mean rare, so I think we need to make America weird again.
