QUESTIONS

1. If you could ask General Petraeus any question, but only one question, what would it be?

Jeb: General Petraeus: Thank you for your exemplary service to our nation.  Would you describe please the progress that is being made in Iraq stabilizing that nation and leading to political reconciliation and do you have the resources necessary to complete that mission?

2. Do you favor Oil recovery in the newly found fields in Montana & the Dakotas?  Jeb: Yes

• Drilling in ANWR?  Jeb: YES

• Drilling in the deep waters off Florida and in the Gulf of Mexico?   Jeb: Yes

• Creating a fast track process to license and build new nuclear plants?  Jeb: YES

Jeb adds: Our nation needs to reduce our dependence of foreign imports by exploring in areas that have previously been off limits which includes ANWR. We also need to permit additional refineries, develop clean coal technology, and license new nuclear plants. Additionally our nation needs to develop renewable energy which should be done by creating incentives in the marketplace rather than direct government subsidies.

3. In the area of healthcare, are you in favor of:

• Giving tax credits for policies to individuals / families as well as businesses?

Jeb: YES

• Allow policies to be purchased across state lines?  Jeb: YES

• Allow individuals to buy lower cost policies by "unhooking" legal mandates

Jeb: YES

Jeb adds: In order to lower the cost of health care we must reduce frivolous lawsuits that force doctors to practice defensive medicine. Small businesses should be able to pool together across state lines to get large discounts from insurers. Health savings accounts should be expanded. These are all provisions I have voted for. Additionally health care costs should be transparent and fully deductable. Individuals ought to be allowed to purchase health care policies outside their home states if they so choose. All of these provisions will lower the cost of health care. I do not support a Canadian style government run health care system.

4. British Prime Minister Brown said that the US must give up the idea of absolute sovereignty in order to better cooperate in the global community.  Agree or disagree, and why?

QUESTIONS

1. If you could ask General Petraeus any question, but only one question, what would it be?

Sen Clegg: What will it take to stabilize Iraq (I believe this is all we need to ask since his answer will tell us how long we will be there to accomplish it)

2. Do you favor Oil recovery in the newly found fields in Montana & the Dakotas?

Sen Clegg: Yes

* Drilling in ANWR? Sen Clegg: Yes

* Drilling in the deep waters off Florida and in the Gulf of Mexico? Sen Clegg: Yes

* Creating a fast track process to license and build new nuclear plants?

Sen Clegg: Yes

3. In the area of healthcare, are you in favor of:

* Giving tax credits for policies to individuals / families as well as businesses?

Sen Clegg: Yes

* Allow policies to be purchased across state lines? Sen Clegg: Yes

* Allow individuals to buy lower cost policies by "unhooking" legal mandates?

Sen Clegg: We already allow high deductible policies, which allow purchasers to decide when the insurer becomes responsible for payment.  This in itself allows for "unhooking" in that the cost, initially, is the responsibility of the initial deductible and the limit of the deductible is a negotiated free market decision between the insurer and the insured.

4. British Prime Minister Brown said that the US must give up the idea of absolute sovereignty in order to better cooperate in the global community. Agree or disagree, and why?

GraniteGrok Q & A Series: Jim Steiner

Jim Steiner

Jim Steiner

Jim Steiner is featured in today’s GraniteGok Congressional Candidate Q & A Series. He is another of the four worthy Republican candidates in New Hampshire’s Second Congressional District.  As with the others, we thank Jim for taking time to answer these questions and further continue to appreciate NH’s candidates acknowledging the growing importance of the readers here in the blogosphere.

===============================================================
QUESTIONS

1. If you could ask General Petraeus any question, but only one question, what would it be?

Jim Responds: General, what is the most important thing I and the Congress can do to help you and our soldiers perform their missions in Iraq and Afghanistan?

2. Do you favor Oil recovery in the newly found fields in Montana & the Dakotas?

Jim responds: Yes, as part of an overall plan at developing a national strategy for energy independence for this country, including the use of solar, bio fuels, wind and other technologies.

• Drilling in ANWR? Jim: Yes.
• Drilling in the deep off Florida and in the Gulf of Mexico? Jim: Yes.
• Creating a fast track process to license and build new nuclear plants? Jim: Yes, and to build new refineries as well.

3. In the area of healthcare, are you in favor of:

• Giving tax credits for policies to individuals / families as well as businesses? Jim: Yes, particularly in order to provide incentive to individuals who must insure outside the employer arena.

• Allow policies to be purchased across state lines? Jim: Yes, and to be made portable so they can travel with an employee from job to job.

• Allow individuals to buy lower cost policies by "unhooking" legal mandates? Jim: Absolutely, I am vehemently against unfunded mandates contained in any legislation.

4. British Prime Minister Brown said that the US must give up the idea of absolute sovereignty in order to better cooperate in the global community.  Agree or disagree, and why?

Jim responds: I disagree.  I cannot find where the Prime Minister stated this, or the context, but the United States remains a singular beacon in the global community not bent on empire building.  When parts of that community are in trouble, recently or historically, the US is called upon to step in.  And we are a fair-minded people who will continue to do that, even though the thanks we receive may be limited.

GraniteGrok Q & A Series: Grant Bosse

Grant Bosse

Grant Bosse signs AFTR pledge back in April (GG file photo)

Next up in GraniteGok’s Congressional Candidate Q & A Series, we have Grant Bosse, Republican candidate for New Hampshire’s Second Congressional District.  As with Senator Sununu, we thank Grant for taking time out of his campaign schedule ("I may be outspent but I’ll never be outworked") and further continue to appreciate NH’s candidates acknowledging the growing importance of the readers in the blogosphere (and our little niche of it).

Grant’s responses are below and as always, feel free to leave a comment!

============================================================

QUESTIONS

1. If you could ask General Petraeus any question, but only one question, what would it be?
Grant’s response:  What steps can Congress take to aid our military and diplomatic efforts to make Iraq a stable and sustainable democracy, able to provide its own security and serve as a positive influence in the Middle East.

2. Do you favor Oil recovery in the newly found fields in Montana & the Dakotas?

• Drilling in ANWR?
• Drilling in the deep waters off Florida and in the Gulf of Mexico?
• Creating a fast track process to license and build new nuclear plants?

Grant’s response: Yes, I support using domestic energy reserves that Congress has unreasonably placed off-limits.  I have also called for the streamlining of the complex regulatory process that prevents new refineries and nuclear power plants from being built, and for an end to the frivolous lawsuits that prevent the construction of new electric power lines.  These proposals are all included in my comprehensive, ten-point Energy Plan.

3. In the area of healthcare, are you in favor of:

• Giving tax credits for policies to individuals / families as well as businesses?
• Allow policies to be purchased across state lines?
• Allow individuals to buy lower cost policies by "unhooking" legal mandates
Grant’s response: Self-employed, small business owners, and stay at home parents should receive the same treatment under the tax code as those of us who go to work for someone else.  There is no reason why health insurance should be bought exclusively through the workplace.  We should also allow consumers to choose the best health plan for them.  State regulators should ensure that insurance companies under their jurisdiction are financially solvent, and able to pay claims.  Restricting insurance companies from offering policies across state lines is an ill-advised restraint of trade.  Increasing competition among insurance companies will increase choice and lower the cost of health insurance.
Likewise, increased mandates on insurance coverage have decreased choice and driven up prices.  Patients and doctors should be making health care decisions, not politicians and bureaucrats.  I strongly favor reducing mandates in health insurance.

4. British Prime Minister Brown said that the US must give up the idea of absolute sovereignty in order to better cooperate in the global community.  Agree or disagree, and why?

Grant’s response: I strongly disagree.  The United States would not gain anything from the global community by ceding its sovereignty, through such poorly drafted agreements as the Kyoto Protocol or the Law of the Sea Treaty, or through submission in the International Criminal Court.

The GraniteGrok Q & A Series– NH’s Congressional Candidates on the Issues

GraniteGrok is pleased to announce the start of our first "Q & A Series". Seeking to focus on particular issues and specifics from political candidates rather than the broad rhetoric most often associated with campaigns, Skip and I have developed a set of questions based mainly on issues that should be, in our opinion, of importance to voters as they decide who they will send to the next Congress. In some cases, they are pretty basic, requiring nothing more than a short and simple answer. Others need more detail.

What follows below is the cover letter sent to the campaigns, along with the questions. Each got the identical document. We sent them via email to these campaigns:

  • Sununu- US Senate
  • Shaheen- US Senate
  • Bradley- House District 1
  • Stephen- House District 1
  • Shea-Porter- House District 1
  • Bosse- House District 2
  • Clegg- House District 2
  • Horn- House District 2
  • Steiner- House District 2
  • Hodes- House District 2

Dear Candidate,

Below, please find a list of questions covering a variety of topics that we believe will be important matters faced by the next Congress. The answers you provide will help voters gain insight into the type of representation they will get, should you be elected to the US House.

What we are offering to each candidate from both NH Districts is the opportunity to submit answers to the questions as presented. Once we receive the answers from all of the candidates, we will publish them in their entirety as guest posts on GraniteGrok. As many of our readers are very active in a wide variety of ways throughout the Granite State, we believe that this is an excellent opportunity that should not to be missed.

We are asking that your response be submitted no later than May 20th. If you do not wish to participate, we ask that you kindly give us the courtesy of saying so, in order that we not delay publishing the responses once we have them from those who do.

In addition to this, we will be issuing invitations to join us on our radio program, Meet the New Press (1490 WEMJ Laconia, Saturdays 9 till 11), and always welcome submissions for guest posting on the ‘Grok as well.

We look forward to hearing from you ASAP as to your participation, and your completed questionnaires by May 20th, the latest.

Best Regards,

Doug Lambert

Meet the New Press radio

As of right now, we have received completed answers from some of the campaigns, and promises to deliver soon from most of the others. Those we have not heard from will be offered another chance to participate. We are happy to report that Senator Sununu’s team responded the fastest, and will therefore be the first Q & A we will be posting here on the ‘Grok.

Keep checking back for updates, as you won’t want to miss what promises to be a helpful tool in getting to know your favorite candidate– or the opponent…  Wink

Oh, and one last thing– We just know we probably left something important out, so if there’s a particular question you’d like asked of a candidate, please don’t hesitate to send it along to either one of us, and we will try to get it answered.

Here are the questions:
