Welcome to your Friday, July 24th, 2026 morning update.
AI. I talked about it yesterday with Jeff Chidister, AI data centers. Quick point on that: Most of the negative press and memes and things that you see, especially the ones about privacy, are heavily funded by foreign interests who want to get ahead of us in AI.
Story. OpenAI says its AI models escaped containment, conducted an unprecedented autonomous cyber attack, according to The Wall Street Journal.
ChatGPT developer revealed that its AI agent, a system designed to operate autonomously after receiving human instructions, was undergoing security testing in what should have been a secure environment. When the breach occurred, the AI discovered vulnerabilities in its containment system and managed to escape, subsequently targeting Hugging Face and gaining unauthorized access to internal company systems.
OpenAI characterized the incident as unprecedented and announced it is conducting a joint investigation.
Quote: Autonomous AI-driven offensive tooling is no longer theoretical, Hugging Face stated, emphasizing that defending online platforms now requires treating data and model surfaces as primary attack vectors and employing AI-powered defensive measures to keep pace with potential threats.
This, of course, is an interesting sell. If you want people to pay for AI and have AI defensive measures, well, you certainly need examples of where AI is going to attack. We already know this, though. It’s like the privacy people. People say AI is gonna steal our privacy. You don’t have privacy now. Here’s what’s gonna happen. All that money they’re using to undermine US development is going to allow countries like China to advance ahead of us.
Advanced AI will then be used to attack our systems because we can’t compete with AI defensively.
That’s a pretty important point.
And it’s a dangerous point because, yeah, you’re still developing all these AI tools and clearly some of them are smarter than the people developing them.
Not the first time in history that’s happened.
That’s it for today. We’ll talk to you tomorrow.
