Morning Update: Free EV*

Today on the Morning Update, some wingnut has called for a national divorce, while EV makers continue to write off tens of billions in losses. It occurs to me that these two matters are, or could be, connected, solving not just both but a good deal more.

00:00 Introduction and Context
01:18 The Electric Vehicle Crisis
02:36 A Radical Proposal for Red States

Welcome to your Tuesday, April 21st morning update. Today I’m combining two topics because they go really well together. So first of all, I don’t have a ton of time to listen to podcasts because I spent a lot of my day doing this. And then I have another part-time job, which most of you know. So when I do listen, I try to be very selective. And today I was walking the dog late and I happened to be listening to Dan Bongino.

And he was talking about some dude named Kyle who said, ” We need a national divorce.” Red States should do their thing. Blue States should do their thing as if that’s not what’s already happening. As if we don’t already know the results. He was convinced that after a hundred years, the blue States would have achieved their successful utopia. Everybody would be happy. Lots of stuff would be free. People would be well fed, and GDP would be better, and red states would be in the shitter.

Of course, we already know that’s not the case because we’ve been having that experiment for almost 250 years. So anyway, Dan’s like me, we’re all for it. I think yes. I think people who think they are blue people should live in blue states, and the rest of us can live in red states. And I had a suggestion based on this problem.

“Germany’s online blackout news here reports that the global automotive industry is facing a potentially existence-threatening crisis due to a massive financial failure in the electric vehicle sector.

In 2024, losses in the electric car segment reached approximately 60 billion euros or 70 billion dollars. Major manufacturers like Volkswagen, Ford, and General Motors have had to perform significant write-downs due to overestimating the market.”

We’ve, of course, written about this gleefully, schadenfreude. We are so excited that the failure we predicted, of course, came to pass because

When you stop funding something well, the real world comes in, kind of like the way blue states work. Anyway.

“Blackout news points to the significant gap between manufacturers’ expectations and reality. Customers are reportedly rejecting EVs or delaying purchases due to 1. High purchase prices 2. Limited range and long charging times 3. Uncertainty regarding battery longevity and 4. The end-of-state subsidies, purchase premiums, which previously artificially supported demand.”

Qe can combine these two problems. All these car manufacturers have all these EVs that nobody wants. I’ve got an idea.

We would save an awful lot of money if we just gave somebody an EV who happens to be a Democrat who wants one for free. The only stipulation is that they pack their shit in it and move the fuck out of red states. And that includes New Hampshire, which is technically purple only because it elects Democrats to Congress thanks to out-of-state college students and other non-resident interlopers. If we remove that burden,

New Hampshire would be red, and we would very happily continue to have our Second Amendment rights, our free speech rights. We would continue to have some of the lowest crime, the lowest poverty, the best health outcomes, and a long list of other things, including economic freedom, fewer EVs, and a lot fewer Democrats.

That’s it for today, I’ll talk to you tomorrow.
