SMITH: Rosenwald’s Retirement Party On Melanie’s Birthday

Near 10 pm at the end of last Thursday’s super marathon senate session, RPK took to her mic, which means it’s something for the WHOLE senate to hear, the whole 16:8 senate.  She announced a retirement party for Rosenwald late Wednesday afternoon, 5/20, at Arts Alley.

It stands to reason that the whole senate is invited, not just the enemy camp, though I’m sure the invitation is open to all members of the enemy camp, whether or not they are current senators.  It’s certainly not unheard of for such blended events to happen.  Did you know that Donna Soucy attended Jeb’s wedding?  I also remember hearing that Kennedy and Orrin Hatch were friends, but let’s stick with just “Concord talk.”

Weddings are usually a more rigid affair in terms of planning, like RSVPing for a head count, whereas a retirement party is more relaxed.  A head count, as any average person would know, is usually about the event hall capacity and how much to order from the caterer.  Then again, most readers probably remember that recent $200 enemy camp event at the Sheraton Tara that did NOT include dinner!  We are talking about the party of thoughtless and/or stupid people, but maybe there was some thought put into this shindig.

Will Queen Sharon make a brief cameo appearance, due to her leadership status, even though she has her own event a few blocks away that PK has arranged?  Did RPK choose the afternoon of May 20 because that’s when the desired event hall was available, or because Team Red is likely not to attend despite being invited?  She is a lawyer, after all, and must therefore know how to build a case.  The skill of building a case is definitely applicable outside of the courts, as she could be building a case for later, saying, “We invited the Rs, but…”

Maybe it was a coincidence, though some people don’t believe in them.  What’s also interesting about May 20 is that it’s a special day for Ms Melanie Levesque.  Does she already have birthday plans?  Maybe her family wants that time with her.  Maybe not.  Who knows?  It’s not uncommon for people to appreciate heartfelt and thoughtful gestures over material things or fancy fanfare as they age.  I don’t know if Melanie would prefer quality family time or a night out, but I put some thought into my gift for her and I want to share it with all readers in case of a near future in-person encounter.  In fact, I would invite anyone who sees her in person on her birthday to take credit for a poem I wrote for her:

Roses are red.
Violets are blue.
Councilor Wheeler will always be…
…younger than you.
