MACDONALD: Knollwood Price Drop!

I have the pink plastic champagne glass from Augusta Petron’s memorial service on the top of the bookshelf behind me. It’s a piece of NH Political history and a reminder of a wonderful human being. Sometimes you can see it in the background of my podcast (GrokTALK!) or the Morning Update, depending on how I have the camera tilted.

August also had a wonderful, historical home, which was put on the market after she passed. The original asking price was 15 million dollars. A worthy sum given the property and the history, but not in just anyone’s price range. Two months later, and presumably no takers, the asking price has dropped to just under ten million.

One of the nicest views of Mount Monadnock may be from a historic estate in Dublin.

The 100-year-old mansion known as “Knollwood” is now on the market for just under $10 million.

“It’s got 13 bedrooms, 9 1/2 bathrooms, over 14,000 square feet, and it’s on 104 acres,” said realtor Sean Bakhtiari.

Lots of pictures here if you’ve never been or been inside and received the tour.

As I noted here, the money isn’t likely to be that big of a deal (plenty of fortune in the family already), not that anyone would liquidate an asset of this caliber for nothing. I think it’s almost more important to ensure the buyer secures the history of a home that is very much unchanged, in its original state, 125 years ago.

Obviously not our call. If you drop ten mil on something, it’s yours, with a few exceptions. The property is a Registered Historic Place, so significant changes or renovations might not be an option, which – I suspect – thins the buyer pool a bit more.

Elon Musk could buy it with couch-cushion money, and while it would be interesting to have him as a sometime “neighbor,” I’m not sure he’d be inclined just to leave it be.

Whoever picks up the property will have at least a few eyes on them. Knollwood means a lot to a lot of people in New Hampshire. Not as much as Joe or Augusta, but still.
