Critical Hearings This Week – January 20-22, 2026 The legislature is moving fast on several firearm-related bills that could either restore or infringe on our rights. We are actively opposing threats and monitoring others. Strong turnout and your voice are essential!
TUESDAY, JAN 20
HB1185 – STRONGLY OPPOSE – Expands the offense of endangering the welfare of a child or incompetent, potentially criminalizing lawful firearm ownership or storage around minors. This risks turning responsible parents and gun owners into criminals. TAKE ACTION NOW – Submit testimony to the committee opposing this bill and sign in opposition. NHFC is sending a letter to the committee.
SB555 – STRONGLY OPPOSE – Senate version of a red flag law (critical risk protection orders) allowing firearm confiscation without due process or criminal charges based on accusations alone. Same dangerous infringement – new year! TAKE ACTION NOW – Submit testimony to the committee opposing this bill, NHFC is also sending a letter to the committee.
HB1201 – STRONGLY OPPOSE – Requires donor disclosure for certain political committees (including 501(c)(4) organizations) like us, adding burdensome regulations that could chill free speech and association. NHFC is taking action on your behalf with a letter to the committee and we will keep you updated as this bill proceeds.
SB463 – STRONGLY OPPOSE – Prohibits possession of firearms in safe school zones, creating new state-level gun-free zones that leave teachers, staff, and students defenseless. TAKE ACTION NOW – Submit testimony to the committee opposing this bill.
WEDNESDAY, JAN 21
HB1077 – OPPOSE AS WRITTEN – Mandates teaching domestic violence prevention in school health/wellness curriculum. While well-intentioned, this expands government-mandated content in schools unnecessarily. NHFC is submitting a letter to the committee.
HB1122 – WATCH – Requires all high school students to learn about hunting, wildlife management, and responsible firearms usage. Potentially positive education on our heritage, but needs monitoring for implementation. NHFC is submitting a letter to the committee.
HB1830 – OPPOSE / WATCH– Mandates firearm safety education (Eddie Eagle-style program) in all public schools with parental consent option – but as an unfunded mandate that could lead to biased or poorly executed teaching by schools we can’t trust to remain neutral. NHFC is submitting a letter to the committee and watching it’s progression.
THURSDAY, JAN 22
HB1203 – OPPOSE AS WRITTEN – Addresses return of firearms after protective orders or certain cases, but codifies processes where judges overstep and forces innocent individuals to petition or “beg” for their property back even when no wrongdoing occurred. TAKE ACTION – tell the committee that due process demands automatic return for the innocent.
