LOTHROP: Conservative Grassroots Movement Leading the Charge in New Hampshire Politics

New Hampshire is seeing the beginning of the end of the family dynasty called Sununu.

It goes deep state.  John H. Sununu, the 75th Governor of New Hampshire from 1983-1989 and 14th White House chief of staff under President H.W. Bush from 1989-1991;  John E. Sununu, U.S. Representative from 1997-2003 and U.S. Senator from 2003-2009; Chris Sununu, 82nd Governor of New Hampshire from 2017-2025 each served our state through numerous challenges of their own.

John H. Sununu had his controversial budget cuts, criticism of favoring corporate interests over constituents, and his political style as being described as combative.

John E. Sununu had a mixed voting record on supporting Israel, and his strong advocation for Palestine  While in the Senate, the National Journal gave him a composite rating of 65.8% conservative and a 34.2% liberal rating.  He certainly was not a conservative darling!  Since leaving the Senate and New Hampshire, John E. has been busy lobbying for Big Oil, Big Pharma, and Wall Street.  He also called President Trump a “loser” recently, angering the growing army of NH grassroots Trump supporters.

Chris Sununu’s pro-choice position infuriated many when he claimed he would make NH a pro-choice state.  His “aw shucks” manner came across as fake and turned a lot of people off.  Days after the January 6 incident, he quickly declared that “Trump’s rhetoric and actions contributed to the insurrection” – all without evidence to back his declaration up.  He further angered the Trump grassroots activists by heavily campaigning for Nikki Haley leading up to the NH presidential primary in 2024 and calling Trump an “a**hole.  Trump went on to win by double digits, leaving Chris gob-smacked.

They’ve all had their ups and downs, but now it’s time for them to ride off into the sunset.

Another has-been, long-time political operative from the NH Swamp, showing his age, is Chuck Douglas, former New Hampshire Supreme Court Justice and congressman.  He recently authored an op-ed in the Union Leader newspaper claiming the recent off-year elections in New Jersey and Virginia show a “strong rejection of Donald Trump.”  There you go again, Chuck, spoken like a real Trump hater.  Earth to Chuck:  New Jersey and Virginia are solid blue states.  I could remind him that Trump wasn’t on the ballot, but thanks to his tone-deafness and spiteful antipathy for all things Trump, it would not compute in the tormented space between his ears.

In his op-ed, he talked about the “brutal masked ICE roundups of long-term residents without papers.”  Read my lips, Chuck: they are called illegal aliens. They have broken the law by crossing our United States borders – of their own free will.  For a former justice, he appears to think the rule of law is selective.  Nobody is above the law, Chuck.  Not even you.

The epitomist “elite” establishment politicians like the Sununus and the Douglases are dinosaurs who stick like glue to each other.  They lack the quality they once had.  Their failure to recognize the advancement of grassroots within the GOP shows their lack of understanding and insight.

Grassroots organizations are everyday people coming together who play a significant role in community-driven efforts to influence change or policy; typically characterized by volunteer involvement.  In a recent grassroots-led poll between John E. Sununu and former U.S. Senator Scott Brown who are both running to represent New Hampshire in the Senate, had John E. at 8% and Scott Brown at 74%.

Scott Brown understands the magnitude and importance of New Hampshire’s conservative grassroots movement.  We the People have spoken, and we will continue to spread our message.  Scott Brown is on our side, and we are on his side.
