Last week, Bryan Gould was sworn in to the New Hampshire Supreme Court by Governor Kelly Ayotte, after the retirement of Justice James P. Bassett.
Filling a critical seat, Justice Gould will help shape the direction of all NH law for decades to come, significantly impacting critical issues such as life and religious and civil liberties.
Another Justice, Anna Hantz Marconi, has a mandatory retirement date of February 12, 2026, which will leave another vital seat open next year. The fight over her replacement will represent our last chance to form an originalist court for the next decade, one that would faithfully follow the meaning and intent of our state constitution as the writers intended.
Nominations to the Supreme Court are made by the Governor and confirmed by a majority of the Executive Council, the five elected officials whose vote is needed to approve major financial and personnel decisions made by the Governor. It is important to note that New Hampshire is one of only three states in which supreme court justices serve lifetime terms, making these appointments especially consequential for the state in the long term.
The right over Justice Marconi’s replacement is our last chance to ensure an originalist high court in New Hampshire for the next decade, one that would faithfully follow the meaning and intent of our state constitution as the writers intended. In our state and nationally, we have all witnessed the damage that can be caused by a politically-motivated judiciary. Just last year, for example, the NH Supreme Court court unanimously voted that schools have the right to hide a student’s secret gender transition from their parents.
We urge you to contact your executive councilor and ask them to make sure Justice Marconi’s replacement is someone who supports our constitution and fights for its protections of life and liberty. Urge them to oppose any “stealth” candidate who may be promoted as conservative but has no public paper trail of their views on these critical issues.
You can find your Executive Councilor here. Simply go to the councilor’s profile page and click on the contact button under their photo to view the list of towns they represent. Alternatively, you can look at the district map to identify your town’s district.
It is imperative that the Executive Council hears from conservative voices like yours. Currently, it is predominantly left-leaning constituents urging the Governor and Council to nominate and confirm liberal activist candidates. The Council needs our input—contact your executive councilor today to make sure the Christian, conservative voice is heard!
