QUARATIELLO: Public Libraries Ignore Columbus

In July 2024, Governor Chris Sununu signed House Bill 1014 which requires towns to recognize Columbus Day and not replace it with the woke faux-holiday celebrating indigenous people.  Public libraries are generally closed on Columbus Day, so as with all holidays celebrated with a day off for staff, signs are placed prominently at entrances and website calendars are updated to inform patrons of these closures.  Recently, patrons of the Dudley-Tucker Library in Raymond saw this sign posted on the door:

Obviously, the public library in Raymond is violating this new law by posting this sign. It’s no surprise, however, that Dudley-Tucker Library Director Kirsten Rundquist-Corbett should be such a scofflaw.  In June 2024, a federal judge issued a consent decree recognizing her violation of an employee’s First Amendment rights (by the way, I was that employee).

Apparently, however, Dudley-Tucker Library was not the only New Hampshire library in violation of the new law regarding Columbus Day.  In the state’s capital, the Concord Public Library posted the following information on its webpage:

The Lee Public Library’s monthly calendar displayed the following announcement:

I’m sure there is more infringement of this law; these are just a few examples.  The temerity of government employees to ignore a law that requires them to simply identify the official name of a state holiday instead of promoting unapproved holidays is concerning.  After all, they are getting the day off with pay for Columbus Day—they could at least recognize the real reason for this costly benefit.

Citizens are tired of this woke nonsense.  On Saturday, an obviously frustrated visitor to the library taped a piece of paper on the outside of the door at the Dudley-Tucker Library that covered up the part of the sign that said “Indigenous People’s Day”:

Last week, President Trump even issued an executive order confirming the significance of Columbus Day.  We should expect that our public libraries will also recognize the true meaning of this holiday.
