Regular rallies held by the YDC Victim’s Advocate at the statehouse call for a federal investigation into the abuses at the Sununu Youth Services Center, formerly known as YDC. However, as Granite Staters, we can investigate our own government through our House of Representatives. As the Grand Inquest of the State, the House can establish a special investigative committee to examine these matters thoroughly—something the state itself cannot do as it is the defendant.
The state faces bankruptcy from hundreds of civil lawsuits for abuse at this juvenile detention facility. In 2021, 11 former state workers were arrested for crimes related to this abuse, and while the criminal trials have begun, the cover-up by the state remains unaddressed. A consolidated master complaint alleges that the abuse—including sexual abuse, physical violence, torture, and more—was known and covered up by those in power, including attorneys general, for decades.

This year, a committee to investigate DCYF, the authority over YDC, was formed by the House Speaker at my request. However, I was removed as soon as I began digging in, taking sworn testimony, and pushing for subpoenas for appearances and documents. DCYF has yet to appear at any committee meetings since my removal. Something is very wrong when public servants are punished for trying to get to the truth.
A real investigation by the legislature is needed, and you can support this cause by signing our petition at www.nhfamilyjustice.com and supporting candidates willing to do the work.
Matt Sabourin dit Choinière is such a candidate. He has consistently shown up for YDC victims and will continue to be a strong voice for transparency, accountability, and justice in Concord.
I urge Seabrook residents to vote for Matt Sabourin dit Choinière in the District 30 Republican primary on September 10th.
