We’ve lived for years with Cities, Counties, and States using the euphemism “Sanctuary” for this or that. Like, to proclaim they are “welcoming” and “inclusive” of people who want a better life for themselves and their families.
And start off doing so by breaking our immigration laws to illegally cross the border.
Then the limp-wristed, bleeding heart authoritarians “leading” such places decide that while THEY can make new law (ordinances, executive orders, et al) for the rest of us, they can casually just dismiss any law that they don’t like.
Then call the rest of us racists and xenophobes for protesting their actions while we glance over to our family, friends, and neighbors. Folks getting screwed over because they did it the “right” way – spent the time and the money to come here legally, get a green card, and then do what was necessary to become naturalized citizens.
And these self-same “leaders” got all butt-hurt when, having changed all the rules, had them applied backward at them as they then decided to keep on infringing on our Second Amendment Rights – and then Second Amendment Cities and Counties starting coming into play. “RULE OF LAW!” they proclaimed in trying shove under the proverbial dust rug what they had done first. “HOW DARE YOU PUT LIVES AT RISK!” they yammered while averting their eyes from what crimes illegals were committing against American citizens.
And now we may be seeing the advent of a new form of Sanctuary – a Sanctuary County in Maine that will allow you to merely walk around and get out of your house. After all, if the Illegal Sanctuaries proudly flaunt the breaking of Federal Law, and the 2A Sanctuaries proudly stand up for Constitutional Rights, well, why not reject new Executive Orders that are in lockstep with the old Soviet Union and East German Stasi:

And so we hear the sound from Maine’s Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols virtually “tearing up” Maine’s Democrat Gov Janet Mills’ “Stay-at-Home” louder than US Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s tearing up President Trump’s SOTU speech:

A message from the Sheriff regarding the latest Executive Order
We will not be setting up a Police State. PERIOD.
The Sheriff’s Office will not purposefully go out and stop vehicles because they are on the road or stop and ask why people are out and about. To do so puts our officers at risk. This is not Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia where you are asked for your papers!
What we will take action on, if needed – are those rare situations where there are a lot of people overtly hanging out in public – obviously in defiance of the Governor’s order. Even in that case – we will first educate and try to disperse the group. We will avoid arrests unless absolutely necessary.
Strong words but remember that even while the Right to Travel (like that of Voting and killing your baby) is not explicitly in the Constitution, it has been acknowledged by the Courts that American Citizens have the freedom to travel about this land without having to explain themselves to anyone.
Or, at least, used to. It, like many other Rights, has been diminished by the “safety and security” folks who don’t much care about such values and Freedom. They are, to be nice, overgrown Jr High student hall monitors with self-inflated egos and a whistle to blow. Such are the “Government over people” crowd (get it? aka, the ones endlessly mumbling about “people over profits” even as these Socialist want to take those profits for themselves?).
Good Sheriff Nichols is simply looking at his elected office and effectively saying “my oath is to the Constitution and not this nitwit down in Augusta”. And there are a LOT of comments left congratulating and thanking him for this declaration. I am assuming, provided that he doesn’t run into his own Black Swan event, he’ll get re-elected for merely being the sane one.
Look, the Democrats are all for complete lock-down of a one size fits all manner. They STILL don’t understand why Trump won’t give in and put a national “stay locked in your homes” policy in place. Frankly, I think his county-by-county outlook is correct – there is absolutely NO need to treat Wyoming, one of the least densely populated States in the Union, as if they were Manhattan.
And in the case of NH, Coos County should get the same treatment as Rockingham County, given the paucity of infections there and the differential of numbers.

Sidenote: paucity – I just like that word but haven’t had much of a chance to use it lately. Excuse me while I overuse it in this post.
Why should the rest of us who are still well be treated as if we were sick. Look, I’ve got a degree in biology, took a number of statistics and calculus classes, and have done biological modeling in my (far distant) past in getting my C.S. degree. I understand what an epidemic is but I also know that many of us are REALLY getting convinced that this pandemic is getting well overblown.
Sure, it is serious but it is NOT as serious as we’ve been led on to believe – just look at the daily comparisons that Grokster Ed has been doing vis-a-vis the actual numbers versus the projected numbers. A lot of other people around the nation are doing the same thing. One thing is clear:
The numbers are not as bad as we’re being told they should be and we are meekly tossing our Freedoms into the trash bin in “trying to do the right things”.
Which is more expensive in the long run – the loss of those Freedoms and then engorgement of Government (even under the lighter hand of Sununu in comparison of ANY of the NH Democrats especially Little Andru the Socialist (don’t forget – Bernie Bro!)), or being told: “wear a mask and gloves, wash your hands, and you’re better off at home than anywhere else”.
But a Free People are supposed to have the Freedom of Choice. People here in the US happen to have a Government. It is the Progressives that have changed that in turning us into a European / Asian model of Government has people that can be ordered around at what seems to be a sniffle or a cough.
Sure, I am being a bit hyperbolic here, but Principles matter and Government is supposed to stay within its lane within the strictures laid out in the Constitution(s). If a law is passed that goes beyond those boundaries, like Sheriff Nichols in this case and all of the 2A Sheriffs, aren’t we honor-bound to tell these totalitarians to go stuff themselves?
Sheriff Nichols is basically saying “I’m going to treat you like the adult citizens you are – my job is not to micromanage your lives” (unlike the Vermont Socialist that decided to rope off “non-essential goods” in the big box stores that also happen to have “essential goods”.
Thank you – and the rest of you take a lesson from him. And stop telling us that we don’t “NEED” this or that. It is not in your job description to tell a Free People that – and if you keep saying that (yes, I’m talking to you, Volinsky The Small), we should be telling you that you don’t NEED any elected office seat at all.
After all, totalitarians are so unbecoming these days.
