When it comes to debates over spending, priorities, and budgets, Senate Republicans appear more than happy to accommodate Democrats… in the 12 regular-order budgets yet to be debated and passed. But they won’t do anything like that until Democrats agree that those are where those conversations should happen.
Republican senators were relieved when President Donald Trump urged them to remain steadfast in refusing to negotiate with Democrats until they vote to reopen the government, Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., told The Daily Signal.
“The president encouraged us all to remain steadfast, and we cheered when he said that,” Daines said in a phone interview following Republicans’ Tuesday meeting with Trump. “We just need the Democrats to come to their senses and realize that they’ve got to start paying the troops, the [Federal Aviation Administration] controllers, [Transportation Security Administration] agents, and others who depend on the federal government.”
When asked if Trump indicated that Republicans would need to cave to Democrats’ demands to pass the continuing resolution, Daines said, “You don’t negotiate when they take the government hostage.”
The clean CR maintains funding at the pre-shutdown level, enabling the resolution of outstanding issues in respective budget bills; however, this will not occur until the shutdown ends.
Only Democrats in the Senate can do that.
The Clean CR has bipartisan support but not enough Democrat votes to pass; it is therefore the Dems shutdown and their problem to solve. But it is also ours.
Democratic Senators are not taking enough heat from constituents, which I can assure you, Republican senators are getting from the left. But Republicans have voted at least ten times to reopen the government; it’s the Dems who are the roadblock.
They won’t pay the troops. They even voted separately not to.
They were content to let poor moms and their kids starve.
Remember when Dems called Republicans the party of No. I think it’s time to resurrect that—no pay for troops or food for low-income moms. No transportation safety, no public safety, and no pay for millions of Democrat voting, union-dues-paying civil servants.
No level funding to make time to debate the people’s budget business in the open, and in their respective departments.
No to everything unless we agree to grants to foreign nations for nonsensical purposes and a return to COVID-era funding for ObamaCare (even though COVID is long gone and over).
Get on the phone, write that email, and be polite but firm. Tell your Democrat Senators that there is a time and a place for the things they want, and it’s not in the Continuing Resolution. And you will get to debate them once you end your shutdown. Pass the clean CR.
