MacDonald: Apple, Republicans, Democrats, and America

Apples don’t have a nut to crack, but Trump figured it out anyway. After applying a lot of pressure and signaling that he’d never back down, Apple promised to increase its total 4-year investment in America to $600 billion. Why? It may be “cheaper” than pandering (and enriching) human rights violators like China in exchange for cheap labor.

Only Trump could get Apple to reduce its spending in China?

Apple today announced a new $100 billion commitment to America, a significant acceleration of its U.S. investment that now totals $600 billion over the next four years. Today’s announcement includes the ambitious new American Manufacturing Program (AMP), dedicated to bringing even more of Apple’s supply chain and advanced manufacturing to the U.S. Through AMP, Apple will increase its investment across America and incentivize global companies to manufacture even more critical components in the United States.

…Apple plans to directly hire 20,000 people in the U.S. — the vast majority focused on R&D, silicon engineering, software development, and AI and machine learning.

Good paying jobs, then.

Apple plans to boost investment in the US by another $100bn (£75bn) as the tech giant comes under pressure from President Donald Trump.

The White House said the money would be used to encourage firms to make more Apple parts in the US and would add to the company’s previous pledge to spend $500bn in the US over four years.

It comes after Trump singled out Apple by name earlier this year, threatening to raise tariffs on its products if it did not move iPhone manufacturing to the US.

Some might think Trump is being a bully, but this is just another aspect of his effort to bring more of the global supply chain back to American shores. As mishandled as the response to COVID was, it exposed significant commercial and national defense weaknesses. Every day, Americans discovered how reliant we’d become on other nations for stuff.

Apple may or may not see this as Trump doing them a favor, but he’s doing Americans a favor.

Will they see it? Will we adequately contrast it with the alternative?

Dems invite crime, drugs, trafficking, and our enemies into America in pursuit of political power. Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans leverage political power to bring jobs and Investment for Americans.
