Mother With Baby on Hip Gets in Shootout With Alleged Intruders
A Decatur, Illinois, mother with a baby on her hip exchanged gunfire with alleged armed home invaders at 4 a.m. on Monday, wounding one suspect and causing him to flee. WANDTV reported there were three alleged intruders in total, one female and two male.
The Herald-Review noted that two of the alleged intruders were armed. The mother, who was home alone with a 5-month-old baby and a 2-year-old toddler, confronted them. She alerted the suspects to the fact that she was armed and told them to leave the property. The two suspects allegedly responded by opening fire.
The mother returned fire, holding the baby on her hip as she shot at the alleged intruders. She wounded one of the three suspects, whom police identified as 24-year-old Deonte A. Stone. The mother was shot twice as well, but her wounds are not life-threatening. Neither the baby nor the 2-year-old child was wounded.
That would have been the best ending – if it had ended there but it didn’t. More details from the Herald-Review:
The 22-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to her left forearm and another gunshot wound to her right hip, according to a sworn affidavit from the Decatur Police Department.
…Police arrived just after 4 a.m. Monday to find the woman’s house in the 700 block of South Stone Street splattered in blood and riddled with more than 30 bullet holes.
In a statement, Lt. Scott Rosenbery, who heads the police department’s Criminal Investigations Division said, three home invaders, each of them armed, had forced their way into the home with the intention of burglarizing it.
In his affidavit, Knierim said the mom had been near her bedroom when the gunfire started. “It should be noted that outside (her house) someone had fired five to six times through the living room window towards (the mom’s) bedroom, striking the TV on the wall of the bedroom and the wall itself,” he said.
That was one brave Mommy – willing to trade her life for her babies. Certainly, she had a lot more motivation than the scumbags. It’s too bad that she only scored on one of them but I’m betting the other two skedaddled outa there in a hurry – cowards.
