Mr. Biden has commuted 37 out of 40 federal death row inmates’ sentences to life imprisonment without parole. This action is the result of Leftist efforts to target racial and economic disparities without stopping to ask: Does the punishment fit the crime? It is racist and bigoted.
Mr. Biden’s decision is clearly a “slap in the face” to victims of these crimes and their families. It is a repudiation of our judiciary, a gross usurpation of our justice system by the executive branch.
The president does have the power to commute sentences. But never in our entire history has such an egregious abuse of this power taken place. The power is meant to right a wrong or limit injustice. It is not meant to contradict judges, juries, and the law directly.
The decision to commute the sentences of the federal death row inmates is not a shift in America’s stance on capital punishment. Instead, it highlights the disrespect Biden and his party have for the law and the American system of government.
Only three inmates did not receive clemency. If this were truly an act of conscience, why not commute them all? Why should taxpayers support those 37 inmates for the rest of their natural lives? Why should their victims be denied justice?
We put the laws in place, for a reason. We should respect them or change the laws. Circumventing the law only encourages lawlessness. These inmates are among the worst killers in the world.
This move disregards the gravity of the crimes committed. With one stroke of the pen, Mr. Biden has undone what he, in his own words, says. “I’ve dedicated my career to reducing violent crime and ensuring a fair and effective justice system …” His actions contradict his words. Precisely what is justice?
