A New Year And Another Day

by Steve MacDonald

New Year’s Eve is the premier alcoholic consumption holiday on the planet (even where it is banned or prohibited). I’ve consumed a few myself in years past, but I declared two things tied to this holiday long ago. First, I don’t like how I feel when tipsy, so I don’t drink enough to get there (on any day). Second, resolutions are something you make every day, not just once a year.

Put another way, I don’t make resolutions because it is New Year’s. Every morning is January 1. Each is an opportunity—Carpe Diem or not.

I get up every morning, 365 days a year, and curate content you will read tomorrow on GraniteGrok—every morning. I schedule content, juggle breaking or relevant news so it publishes that day, plan podcasts (especially now that we’re adding a few), write as much as I can, deal with requests for ads or sponsored content, chase unpaid invoices, and try to figure out how to raise more money to keep the Grok lights on.

I have a part-time remote job to supplement the insufficient Grok income and will be fishing for freelance projects to supplement that. The dog needs to get walked, dishes need washing, and dinners need planning. Things break, and you fix them; problems arise, and you tackle them; some things have to wait, and there are people in the world to love, like, respect, and challenge.

Some things you do daily to get them done that need doing for months or years from now. They may not be resolutions, but getting them done for a purpose kind of is.

Pissing a few people off isn’t a planned event. It just happens when you say things others disagree with. Sometimes, they take it personally; if you are the resolution type, I suggest not letting it, especially in politics. Keep the relationship physical; be passionate but not emotional, or it will consume your soul, and you need that.

Remember, every day, that you are blessed – even in the worst of circumstances, knowing they could get worse or better, especially if you happen to be reading this in America or are from here reading it somewhere else. Everything is possible here if you decide to do what you need to do to get there.

Life is impossibly complex and often difficult, even for people who have it easy because being human is hard. Being decent is harder, but trying every day is also good for your soul.

There are no days off, just days where you planned to do things differently, and you need to do that too—days where things go sideways because of you or someone else.

No one is perfect, and neither are we. Forgive those who truly represent and forgive yourself when you don’t do what you thought you would or could. Tomorrow is another January 1st. Plan to make it right or do it right or start it or finish it.

Happy New Year.
