U.S. Secret Service agents posted a few holes up from where Trump was playing noticed the muzzle of an AK-style rifle sticking through the shrubbery that lines the course, roughly 400 yards away.
An agent fired and the gunman dropped the rifle and fled in an SUV, leaving the firearm behind along with two backpacks, a scope used for aiming and a GoPro camera, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said. The man was later taken into custody in a neighboring county.
- The FBI said Sunday it “is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination” of Donald Trump. The former president is safe after shots were fired at Trump International Golf Club on Sunday.
- A Secret Service agent spotted a rifle barrel sticking out of fence and “engaged” with the suspect, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said at a news conference late Sunday afternoon. The gunman was 300 to 500 yards away from Trump, a Secret Service official said. Law enforcement found an AK-47 style rifle, GoPro and backpacks where the suspect was positioned, Bradshaw said.
- The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said a man taken into custody was “relatively calm” when detained. The suspect has not been named.
- President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are both “relieved to know” that Trump is safe and have been briefed on the situation, according to the White House.
Relieved to know? Seriously.
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said his agency and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office are “investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m.”
“The former president is safe,” Guglielmi continued, adding that the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office would “soon” have more details to share.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said it stopped a vehicle and a suspect believed to be connected to the shooting was taken into custody. Martin County is located just north of Palm Beach County.
And the FBI later released a statement, saying, “The FBI has responded to West Palm Beach Florida and is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Trump.”

The Secret Service Appears to have done the job right this time around. I can’t help wondering if that was the point. Sorry,if I’m just a bit cynical.

Marion County William Snyder told reporters that when the suspect—who has not been officially named as of Sunday evening—was detained, he was calm and asked no questions about why.
The state attorney for Palm Beach County, David Aronberg, told a news conference that the suspect will be charged at the state level but federal charges are also likely.
Prosecutors are working on a warrant and detention applications.
“Our filing of the warrant and charges at the state level does not preclude the federal charges that could be coming,” he said. “But in the meantime, it looks like the warrants and a pretrial detention motion will happen first.” …
“The State of Florida will be conducting its own investigation regarding the attempted assassination at Trump International Golf Club,” DeSantis, a Republican, said in a social media statement. “The people deserve the truth about the would-be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee.”
Another Epoch Times Update 9-16-25 11:25 am:
The suspected would-be assassin of former President Donald Trump has been identified by officials as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58. …
Routh’s son, Oran Routh, told DailyMail.com that his father hates Trump as “every reasonable person does.”
The younger Routh said his father was not a violent person and that the allegations against him were out of character for him.
“He’s my dad and all he’s had is couple traffic tickets, as far as I know,” he said. “’That’s crazy. I know my dad and love my dad, but that’s nothing like him.”
