Some years ago my daughter asked me “When are you going to die”? A rather grim question, actually, but bless her for having curiosity. I replied that I didn’t know, obviously, but that my dad lived until his 90s, my mother into her 80s and only then cut short because of dementia and then pneumonia (a mercy – she was bed-ridden, immobile, and who she was as a person was fading; it was, literally, the fate she’d feared more than anything). My daughter said she wished for me to live past 100 and I said openly that I didn’t want to live that long. Which surprised her.
