NHLA Public Hearing Testimony Training Session

by
Op-Ed

Former NHLA board member and endorsed Representative Dan McGuire has offered to host an NHLA Bill Testimony Training session in Concord this week.

This Thursday, there will be a public hearing on CACR 1 relating to the governor. Providing that there be a lieutenant governor who shall assume the duties of the governor if the governor is incapacitated.

The intent of this training is for interested students to come to the public hearing, observe and/or testify and then, after the hearing (it is the last hearing of the day in the room), stay in the room for a post-hearing discussion on what happened, what people could have done better and general principles of testifying at a public hearing.

Note that the NHLA has not taken a position on this proposed constitutional amendment, so it’s a great way to go and potentially speak for the first time without the pressure of feeling like you might let down your peers! Even if you just observe and stay for the post-hearing discussion, this will be a great opportunity to learn so that you are prepared for the next time you’d like to try your hand at testifying!

It is recommended that you take a look at our written guidance on testifying before this event. If you choose to testify, please be sure that your remarks are less than 3 minutes. There is nothing wrong with speaking for fewer than 3 minutes!
