Last week, Hans Fiene – writing in the Federalist–coined the term “Selma envy” to describe the fervor of gay-marriage supporters. In their search for the heroic narrative, Fiene’s generation has appropriated the courage of the Civil Rights movement. In two stinging paragraphs, he illustrates the absurdity:

Likewise, we will continue linking the civil-rights movement with the push for gay acceptance without pausing for a second to consider the comparison. We will continue diminishing the bravery of Rosa Parks by claiming a seat beside her as our reward for the one time we boycotted Chick-Fil-A for a month. We will trivialize the death of Medgar Evers by praising his blood for freeing gay couples to financially ruin a florist who hurt their feelings instead of walking one more block to find another purveyor of petunias who was happy to take their money.

Salem Selectman Stephen Campbell was the sole opponent to a massive $23 million dollar safety complex boondoggle on the select-board and he let people know his concerns. For months he shared information about the complex, asked questions, questioned assumptions, advanced cheaper alternatives, shared answers, directed people to the content of public meetings and testimony, and shared his own thoughts, not just in meetings but on Facebook.

The four other board members were for the complex as was the town manager. Several of them privately funded an informational flier for the public. And I’m sure the police, fire, and town employee unions were all on board for the big new safety complex as well. But in the end, the complex went down in flames. Whether a result of Board member Campbell’s persistence or not, the public didn’t want to spend that much money.

So what is one of the first priorities for the Salem board of Selectman after town elections?

Yesterday Daymond Steer of the Conway Daily Sun wrote an article about the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee’s vote on SB 116 also known as ‘Constitutional Carry’. That vote happened today and the bill passed out of committee with the recommendation of ‘Ought to Pass’. Steer did his due diligence by interviewing both sides on the issue but he failed to do his research in a big way.

A Pastor from Exeter complained today that she is sick of getting spam emails from the Rand Paul campaign. Obviously someone sold the campaign an email list and she and other Churches happen to be on it.

Her supposed complaint was in defense of keeping church and state separated; however, a quick look at her website proves this Pastor is absolutely full of it.

Yes, I got off track with other things – seems to be an easy thing lately (getting distracted).  So, we get near the end of this sorry trail with Al Letizio – the guy who wasn’t happy with Grokster Kimberly’s posts and wanted me to yank them.  And yet, even with his protestations of malfeasance by Kimberly, I have NEVER, EVER heard one exact piece of a wrong fact from him.  Nor, from his chuckleheaded imtimidator-wannabee, Dennis Senibaldi.

• I knew of Kimberly’s reputation well before I invited her to blog here.  I only offer writerships to those I can trust.

But today’s liberalism has become wholly authoritarian, though it is obviously ill-liberal in the extreme. (Pat Moynihan thought so as early as the 1960s; he remarked to Nixon in 1970, “I know there is an authoritarian Left in this country, and I fear it.” What would he think now?)

We do have some of the Left persuasion that do visit GraniteGrok and comment.  Possibly to their great surprise, I actually welcome them here for the discussions and the debates – it was never intended that the ‘Grok be an echo chamber.  However, there have been some times that questions ARE asked by other commenters but seem to go unanswered – text, yes, but not a head on, straight forward answer (e.g., at what point do taxes become too high – what is an upper limit percentage-wise?).

Here’s a series of ten questions I’ve yet to see anyone on the Left answer:

• Are there any limits at all on what government can make someone do? If so, where would those limits come from?
• Are women a protected class? Re:  Planet Fitness / Yvette Cormier and Memories Pizzeria in Indiana.
• How come we are having this debate at all? Didn’t your side promise the American people for years “no one would lose their freedom if we allowed the freedom to marry?” Were you purposefully dishonest when you repeatedly trotted out that now discredited line, or just naive?
• Do you know how many times RFRA laws have been used to discriminate against someone for their sexuality?

We’ve been blogging about the extremely Liberal city of Seattle and its misguided attempt to suspend the economic laws of Supply and Demand in order to feel good about themselves “Hey!  We’re HELPING!” the poorer amongst us.  They’ll have more money, they’ll have better lives, they’ll be happier”!  ON the conservative side, we all went “this is not going to end well, but even as we’ll be sorry for the victims-to-be, you will hear we told you so”.  Profit margins (or lack there of), artificially inflated labor costs by government fiat, downgrade of materials – there are consequences to be paid.  Problem is, while the Left blithely said “So?  Just raise prices”, consumers aren’t following the plan and are going elsewhere (or not going period, emphasis mine, reformatted):
