The Government Is Not the Parent of Children, nor Should It Be.

Dear House Education Committee, I attended the public hearing for SB 272. As you know, people threw around examples of why SB 272 is good and why it’s bad.

The story that impressed and chilled me the most was the one where teachers encouraged a child who was questioning her sexuality (a pretty normal thing for a teenager) to be trans. And when the parent got wind of it, the teachers were silent. It is heartwarming to know that the parents took the child out of school and helped her figure it out naturally. Not all parents know they have this option.

The stories about abusive families were meant to scare you. I have to ask how they define abusive if 35% of families are considered to be abusive. Is yelling at a child abusive? Getting mad at them? I have no idea, and expect that since the government is defining it that it’s too broad. We all know of families who have had their children taken away from them for no good reason.

The vast majority of families are not abusive, and this bill covers the case for those few families who are. The government is not the parent of children, nor should it be.

Anyone who votes against SB 272 supports teachers encouraging children to be trans AND keeping that information from the parents. Teachers can barely teach children to read (just take a look at the test scores), and now they’re untrained therapists? It’s a scary world when this is okay.

Please vote OTP on SB 272.
