One of the things the GOP Machine in New Hampshire is good at is losing Federal Races. They either anoint a RINO at the expense of an existing good candidate or ignore those good candidates and prevent them from getting enough money to compete.
The latest installment of this is the end of Democrat Maggie Hassan’s first term as a Representative of DC to New Hampshire in the US Senate. Governor Sununu was the best candidate until his response to the pandemic tanked his numbers. Late polling showed it to be less of a cakewalk than in previous years, so he opted to try and keep the job he’s got.
Whatever the motivation, His Excellency was out, leaving the NHGOP and the RNC with a problem.
The plan was for Chris to replace Maggie and one-term Senator Kelly ‘McCain’ Ayotte to replace Chris as governor. With Sununu skipping the DC dance, Ayotte won’t run for governor, and she isn’t interested in running for Senate.
All the people who decide such things were called to pick the successor candidate, ignoring the excellent existing candidate, Gen. Don Bolduc.
Rather than beat the bushes to get Bolduc a war chest, they beat their chests to find a suitable RINO to whom they could donate. They found their guy. State Senator Chuck Morse has “stepped up” to carry the banner. Chuck has formally announced he will challenge Hassan for the seat in November.
State Senate President Chuck Morse has decided to become a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2022 and plans to file a statement of organization creating a campaign committee with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday, Morse and his recently hired consultant confirmed Sunday.
Morse will have to beat Bolduc and a handful of relative unknowns for the privilege of facing off against Maggie, but he’ll have more money and maybe more name recognition. The GOPe will be pushing all the buttons for him and promoting his candidacy even though they’re not supposed to take sides in a primary.
If he loses the primary, the same button-pushers and check-writers will vanish into the mist, preferring Hassan to an actual Republican. That has been the trend to date. An enemy establishment candidate is preferable to anyone who might rock their little dinghy.
One positive note; depending on who runs to replace Morse in the NH Senate. We’ll have gotten Morse out of the NH Senate.
If Morse wins the primary, he’ll have an excellent chance to unseat Hassan. I think almost anyone who can campaign well should. The economy is bad now, but projections suggest it could be a lot worse by then. And while I’d love to see Hassan sent packing, I think Morse will find too much comfort in the salons of Georgetown and the DC Beltway.
Morse has been in the NH Senate for sixteen years so, from one Good Ole’ Boys Club to another.
Just another establishment Republican riding the decline of America at the expense of future generations.
I’d love to be wrong, but I’m not.
