Backup, backup, and back up again (reformatted, emphasis mine): “Facebook Reverses Course After Backlash for Permanently Locking Account of Conservative Children’s Book Publisher.”
Facebook on Monday allowed a children’s book publisher access to its account after claiming it was permanently blocked from the social media platform. Facebook told Heroes of Liberty, the publishing company, that because of the “disruptive content” they posted, the account was locked for good. But Andy Stone, a communications officer for Facebook parent company Meta, said Monday night the ban was done in error. “This should not have happened. It was an error and the ad account’s been restored,” Stone wrote on Twitter.
Heroes of Liberty focuses on books about historical and current figures who embody American values, including late President Ronald Reagan and Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Bethany Mandel, who founded the company, said it invested considerably in Facebook even before officially launching.
So that’s the background and certainly, the company is in the “kill zone” for Facebook to take a whack. But here’s the important part from then.
“When Facebook shut down our account, we lost all the data that we carefully gathered for the last six months. We can’t communicate with the audience that we built. Our ad account is permanently disabled. The consequences to our business could be devastating,” Mandel said on social media before the account was restored.
This is an issue that Grokster Steve speaks to often and he ALWAYS hammers this home. Have a website under your control in which to stash your “digital stuff.” That way, it is ALWAYS under your control – it can’t be deleted by Facebook, Twitter, or Google (er, don’t store it on Google Drive).
The best scenario is to create your content locally (your PC) and THEN share it out to your various channels.
Heroes of Liberty didn’t do such and look at the risk of failure they put themselves into. ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP especially in an environment that is hostile to you as a conservatarian.
You might think that what you leave as a comment (on other peoples’ pages) or a post on social media is inconsequential. Well, it’s not. You’re building a reputation and you are building a following. THAT you don’t want to lose.
Normally, one thinks of doing backups when you have a company (or operate in one). That’s good but it also applies to people as well. All of my digital devices get fully backed up on either a monthly or weekly basis (phone the former and PCs/tablets the latter; I admit I only do full backups and not “incremental”).
And yes, it’s worth the pain, effort, and time – I’ve had to RESTORE files/directories in the past when things got accidentally deleted and then cleared off the disk. Mighty happy I had them.
External drives are cheap and you should get one if at all possible.
Then at the root of your drive, create a single folder (i.e., C:\MyData) under which you put ALL your data (and not under the app folders). Easy to drag and drop and then you can walk away and let it do its thing.
You’re welcome!
