What Could Go Wrong – Postal Workers Union Endorses Joe Biden for President

If you wanted to make a case for a conflict of interest, here you go. The US Post office has a monopoly on First Class Mail, handling mail-in ballots, and the Letter Carriers Union just endorsed Joe Biden for President.

The National Association of Letter Carriers, which represents 300,000 current and retired workers, said Thursday that Trump has long been hostile to the Post Office. His administration has called for an end to collective bargaining rights, proposed service cuts, and has eyed the possibility of privatizing the functions of the agency.

Privatizing the US Post Office is a brilliant idea, and we’ve advocated it here, but you can’t just do that. You’d still have a first-class mail monopoly problem. You need to open up access to that activity to everyone from existing carriers like Fed Ex, UPS, DHL, Amazon, and locals.

Every one of those would need to hire carriers, and the USPS happens to have 300,000 of them trained with facilities.

Existing carriers could have their benefits and pensions retooled, so we don’t break any promises. New hires would see something different based on the labor pool, demand, and those competing for space as they do in the small-package market now.

The other issue has nothing to do with making a bloated bureaucracy less of a sink on resources and a better value for consumers. Vote-by-mail-fraud presents logistical challenges. The USPS has said it can’t handle the increased volume in the mail. It can’t guarantee ballots would arrive on time as a matter of equipment, human resources, and time.

And now, the letter carriers, who know which customers receive which mail from various candidates and organizations, has picked Joe Biden and would be handling those ballots.

No.

And it’s not that I generally distrust postal workers, that is not it at all. I distrust human weakness and government agencies. Combine them, and malfeasance happens. If you don’t believe me, think about this. What would the response be from the left if the Letter Carriers endorsed Trump?

It would be the end of Vote by Mail and possibly COVID19 to ensure people could vote at the polls.

Now, think about that means?
