Why are they worried that their University name would “harm” their students?

Washington and Lee University faculty have just virtue-signaled their intent to join the “erase history” fad. I do have to wonder about that, given that these “smaht” people must be aware that those that don’t know history are doomed to repeat it…

SHOT: Washington & Lee Professors Vote to Remove ‘Lee’ from School Name

The faculty of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, voted on Monday to remove the name of Robert E. Lee from the university’s name. During a faculty meeting on Monday, 79 percent of faculty voted in favor of a change to the university’s name. According to a report by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the faculty at Washington & Lee University voted on Monday to remove “Lee” from the university’s name.

Zoila Ponce de Leon, an assistant professor at the university, argued that the name change would be a small step towards making students from “diverse backgrounds” more “comfortable” on campus. “A name change is a symbolic gesture, but what we really need to invest our energy in is changing our behavior as faculty and students,” Ponce de Leon. “The members of our community who come from diverse backgrounds don’t feel comfortable because of how we treat people — it isn’t just the name.”

CHASER: Who they think they are assuming that their students even know who “Washington” and “Lee” actually were?

I’m betting their students have a very dim clue as to who these people are unless G&L are giving them remedial history classes (Lord know what the curriculum would be given the above!). But I do have to wonder about the “diverse backgrounds don’t fee comfortable” bit.

From what I understand of the world, students have to VOLUNTARILY apply and then be accept in order to attend. One would think that if they felt “uncomfortable”, wouldn’t they have gone elsewhere? So why is this a “thing” with these blinkered professors who are sounding like a mashup between Hogwart’s and Animal House.

No, this is just yet another incident in the BLM fad intermixed with having to be continually offended by something or someone.
