Who do these Union Teachers in LA think they are? The Medical industry, which feels like it can tell people when to stay home and when they go out? I’m sorry, like that old commercial, this isn’t how it works.

L.A. teachers union says schools can’t reopen unless charter schools get shut down, police defunded
They also want Medicare-for-All, a wealth tax, a federal bailout.
major teachers union is claiming that the re-opening of schools in its district cannot occur without several substantial policy provisions in place, including a “moratorium” on charter schools and the defunding of local police.
United Teachers Los Angeles, a 35,000-strong union in the Los Angeles Unified School District, made those demands in a policy paper it released this week. The organization called on local authorities to “keep school campuses closed when the semester begins on Aug. 18.”
The union outlined numerous major provisions it says will be necessary to reopen schools again, including sequestering students in small groups throughout the school day, providing students with masks and other forms of protective equipment, and re-designing school layouts in order to facilitate “social distancing.” Yet the union goes even farther than those requests, calling for “local support” in the form of defunded police departments and the shuttering of charter schools. The union also demands the implementation of a federal Medicare-for-All program, several new state-level taxes on wealthy people, and a “federal bailout” of the school district.
“The benefits to restarting physical schools must outweigh the risks, especially for our most vulnerable students and school communities,” the document continues.
It also talks about public health and housing. How about the risk of losing your jobs for being bigger than your britches?
What they are acting like are spoiled children. Seriously, look at the list of demands.
How is a School District supposed “defund police” and shutter charter schools they may not have jurisdiction over?
How are they supposed to just “give” the union Medicare-for-all as a subdivision of the State of California?
Do they really think they can preempt the California Assembly (not that the Assembly would need much prodding in this area given recent history)? But I’m fairly sure that getting more money from the Feds would be merely an ask without expecting a reply.
No, this is a great example of the utter ignorance of the teachers within the union leadership. They SHOULD know that none of these demands are achievable. Unless, of course, they’re just throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks and what doesn’t. The latter part just gives them “deniability” to return to work. And, of course, you see that it really isn’t about the children, either. With teachers’ unions, it’s all about the adults.
This is what happens with public sector unions. They decide that they can play out of their lane.
Of COURSE they are political – they ARE Government and they are their own Special Interest Group looking to get more FROM Government at the same time. Lovely how that works. Give us more and we’ll be a reliable voting bloc to keep your butt in that seat. If not, we’ll prove that a Government that can give you stuff can take it away, too. And in LA, 35,000 plus teachers is a powerful self-interest.
Adults? Parents? Taxpayers? We don’t care. After all, we’re Selfish Socialists with a tantrum problem.
Oh yeah, the color of their logo? It ain’t red for being Republican…
