Something OTHER than COVID-19 – but it’s still a virus of the Culture kind

by Skip

We, along with almost all of the other media, have been obsessed with this Chinese Flu for what seems to be forever. Unlike the other media, we do try to put a “Freedom / Liberty” context on it.

That said, I’m glad to have something else to write about OTHER than what Chinese President Xi unleashed upon the world. But it’s still a virus – a spiritual/cultural one: the erasure of any measure of indigenous people. It’s always the Politically Correct nanny-ers that just have to find a problem with SOMETHING in order to either be in the news or make themselves relevant. And how better than to pick a school mascot? Emphasis mine, reformatted:

Student petition aims to change ‘Sanborn Indian’ mascot

More than 400 people have signed a student petition calling on Sanborn Regional High School in Kingston to replace its “Sanborn Indian” mascot that has been used since the 1950s.
The online petition that was created at Change.org and has been circulating on social media argues that it is inappropriate for the school to use the images and culture of indigenous people for a mascot. “Native Americans and indigenous people have rich history and culture and should not be reduced to a stereotype or caricature,” the petition said.

We here at GraniteGrok have never thought that images of Native Americans…

Sidenote: I’M a native American – born, raised, lived, and will die here. I have as much right to call myself that as any other native to the US. I will admit, I’m not a native New Hampshire-ite as I’ve only been here about 36 years.  I am tired, however, of the Left’s self-righteous pronouncements that their Politically Correct Identity Group Politics Totem Pole MUST be be our moral North Star in all we do.  Go pound sand.

…were stereotypes or caricatures. Frankly, every time I saw something like the Sanborn Indian, I always thought “Warrior!” and all of the good attributes that go along with that: ability to overcome fear, to push oneself beyond previously thought boundaries – and being leaders. And yet the Left wants to dissolve them from our culture?  Yep, another case of destroying the village in order to safe it:

The petition was started by a Sanborn Regional High School student who wished to remain anonymous for fear of backlash, but the campaign has since been embraced by her friend, 18-year-old senior Ava Tavares, who has been sharing it on community boards and trying to bring awareness to the effort. Tavares said she would like to see a mascot that is a more socially and culturally relevant image than the Native American man with a headdress.

Does she even REALIZE what she just said, this Ava Tavares? A symbol that is “more socially and culturally relevant image”. Talk about being tone deaf.  Really, she just dissed Native American Indians – “you’re not relevant to our culture and you are not relevant“.  And then goes on to make it worse:

“My hope, of course, is to change the mascot to something that is more inclusive and makes more sense in our community. Having a Native American as a mascot in our community doesn’t make any sense,” Tavares said Tuesday, adding that the community doesn’t have a large Native American population.

So, since this is NH, which is predominately white, make one of your Senior Citizens the mascot. I’m betting that population is larger than the “community” you just dissed.

Thankfully, she’s getting a lot of pushback:

Tavares said the goal is to reach 500 signers before presenting the petition to the school administration to consider creating a new mascot. While more than 400 people had signed the petition by Tuesday afternoon, Tavares acknowledged that the majority of comments on social media have come from people opposed to a mascot change. Tavares said many of the critics have resorted to personal attacks against her and other supporters of the petition.

Well, given the culture has gone there (we’re just playing by the Left’s rules nowadays), what did you expect? And did you REALLY expect that people who love tradition and hate the idea of change because POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. They’re tired of being shoved around by those that believe they are more “woke” than thou. The piece closes with this

…Tavares created a Facebook poll seeking suggestions on other possible mascots. The most popular as of Tuesday afternoon was the “Sanborn Huskies” followed by the “Sanborn Lions.” Huskies was the Sanborn mascot before the school switched to “Sanborn Indians.”

Hmmm, how large of a population do Huskie dogs have in Sanborn, or even Lions? How going from an Indian demographic to a four footed furball be “more inclusive” or “relevant“?

Edumacate me, people, as I can’t answer my own question. I do posit that as more and more busybodies go about eliminating any and all symbols of Native Americans, they WILL just become invisible AND irrelevant. Just like Ava wants, right? Law of Unintended Consequences, Ava!
