New Hampshire Coronavirus Update

by

Welcome to the New Hampshire coronavirus update. The first coronavirus case in New Hampshire was reported on March 2. The information presented is from reporting of yesterday’s (4/15/20) results.  Information presented came from the NH HHS and New York Times.

There have been a total of 1,210 cases reported and 34 deaths in New Hampshire since tracking started. Less than one tenth of one percent if New Hampshire citizens have been affected by the virus. 100% of the citizens of New Hampshire are impacted by the restrictions on our civil liberties. Mr. Governor, LET MY PEOPLE GO!!!

Why is the whole state shut down if the virus is localized to two counties?

Overnight the number of new cases increased by 71. This is up from 49 reported the day before. Belknap, Grafton, Cheshire, Carroll and Coos counties are reporting no new cases. Hillsborough and Rockingham counties have the majority of the new cases. Together they are about 83% of the new cases. The other 8 counties report an aggregate 12 new cases.

What objective standard are we using to justify the continuance of the emergency order?

Fear is not an objective standard. In normal circumstances 33 people die in New Hampshire every day from non-coronavirus causes. Since we started tracking coronavirus statistics 34 people have died. This is about 1 every other day. This would not be high in a normal flu season.

What You Can Do To Minimize Risk:

Experts’ understanding of how the virus spreads is still limited. There are four factors most likely playing a role:

  1. How close you get;
  2. How long you are near the person;
  3. Whether that person projects viral droplets on you; and
  4. How much you touch your face.

If your community is affected, you can help reduce your risk. Do your part to protect others. Follow these basic steps:

  • Wash your hands!
  • Scrub with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and then
  • Dry them with a clean towel or let them air dry.
  • Keep distance from sick people.
  • Try to stay six feet away from anybody showing flu- or cold-like symptoms, and
  • Don’t go to work if you’re sick.
  • Prepare your family, and communicate your plan about evacuations, resources and supplies.
  • Experts suggest stocking at least a 30-day supply of any needed prescriptions.
  • Consider doing the same for food staples, laundry detergent and diapers, if you have small children.
