Mexico is a bit uneasy about the announcement, and who could blame them. It is not yet clear what declaring the Mexican Drug Cartels as a Foreign Terrorist Organizations will mean. But President Trump says he is ready to pull that trigger.
“I don’t want to say what I am going to do, but they will be designated,” Trump responded. “I’ve already offered Mexico … to let us go in and clean it out and he so far has rejected the offer but at some point something has to be done. Look, we are losing 100,000 people a year to what is happening and what is coming through on Mexico.”
“So you are going to designate the Mexican cartels as terror groups?” O’Reilly pressed.
“Yeah, I will be,” Trump responded.
The Cartels took advantage of jelly-fish Obama and the Democrat’s open border priorities. They used DACA and other easy-access strategies to move gangs, people, and drugs into the US. The Left is responsible for the opioid epidemic that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. And if a Democrat takes the White House, any improvements will get reversed.
We need to do something, but what? Is this just an escalation on the war on drugs or a targeted strategy with a beginning middle and end designed to put a cap on decades of ‘chemical warfare’ by which I mean drug trafficking?
As I noted here, we can’t begin to guess what such a declaration will look like on the ground.
I’m not picturing Mexico inviting any sizeable force across the border to do battle with cartels. It seems more likely that the US could provide eyes in the sky, precisions strike teams, technical support.
Mexico is seeking high-level meetings to work out the details. To find out what Mr. Trump thinks he can do.
Politically, the terrorist declaration has more teeth than anything the Democrats have proposed. It’s highly visible, strategic, and measurable (assuming the plan has an exit strategy that defines victory).
All the Left ever asks for is more money for treatment. Democrats appear to be more interested in using this crisis to expand budgets and government.
We need treatment but in conjunction with a strategy that slows or stops the growth of the problem. Opioid access is creating armies of new addicts and the culture of crime that follows it. On the latter point, all Democrats have done is to give criminals sanctuaries from which to operate and proposed increasing spending on local policing when they commit crimes.
Translated, that means bagging bodies and writing reports. That’s not exactly my idea of establishing Justice, insuring domestic Tranquility, providing for the common defence, promoting the general Welfare, or securing the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.
It’s controlled chaos to ensure expanding budgets and a militarized police force. Just what every socialist wants for
