Book Review – Justice on Trial: The Kavanaugh Confirmation and the Future of the Supreme Court

I recently took a mini-vacation in Bermuda, which gave me the opportunity to read Justice on Trial, a bestseller by Mollie Hemingway (senior editor at the Federalist) and Carrie Severino (chief counsel at the Judicial Crisis Network) about the nomination and eventual confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court. Some takeaways:

The utter ruthlessness of the Left: The Left -and that includes virtually all of the Democrat Senators- is willing to go way beyond “playing hard-ball” in the pursuit of political power. In short, they will do anything to “win.” It is impossible NOT to conclude that those championing/supporting Christine Blasey Ford -the woman who accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her in high school- knew that her accusations were untrue. Yet they pushed them anyway … even though they had to know that if they succeeded they would have destroyed the lives of not just Kavanaugh, but of his wife and two young daughters. These are not good people.

I think it will never conclusively be known if Blasey Ford was a pawn or a knowing participant. My take after reading Justice on Trial is the latter.

The utter unscrupulousness of the “press”: The bias of the press was not limited to pushing the Left’s increasingly far-fetched accusations … such as Michael Avenatti’s claim that Kavanaugh regularly participated in gang-rape parties … they refused to cover anything that would have discredited these accusations.

How the Bushies almost blew it: Kavanaugh served in George W. Bush’s Whitehouse, and was getting advised by the Bushies to “take the high road”, “remain above the fray”, blah, blah, blah … which would have made him appear to be a scripted robot trying to lawyer his way through the accusation as opposed to a real human outraged at the vile falsehoods being hurled at him.

Don’t mess with Melania: While watching Blasey Ford’s testimony, Melania turned to the President and said (my best recollection, I can’t remember the exact words in the book): you know she is lying don’t you.

The Trump difference: There is a good chance that Brett Kavanaugh would not be on the Supreme Court if ANY of the other candidates for the GOP nomination in 2016 had been elected President. The gut reaction of the GOP Establishment is to cut and run from a fight. That’s not Trump. Equally heroic was Lyndsy Graham who stole the show in the Judiciary committee with an epic takedown of the Democrats when Kavanaugh was delivering his counter-testimony.And although I am no fan of hers, another hero of this saga was Maine’s Senator Susan Collins who stood firm against the pressure and attacks of the Left and delivered a stirring speech in defense of Kavanaugh and more broadly in defense of due process.

Justice on Trial is a great read for anyone interested in politics.
