If the Government Becomes a Lawbreaker

In 1928 Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, wrote in, Olmstead v. United States, 277 U.S. 438, “Decency, security and liberty alike demand that government officials shall be subjected to the same rules of conduct that are commands to the citizen. In a government of laws, existence of the government will be imperiled if it fails to observe the law scrupulously. Our government is the potent, the omnipotent, teacher. For good or for ill it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for the law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself, it invites anarchy.”

Are we asking the right questions?

What has changed since 1928 when Justice Brandeis made that observation?  Do you understand the CIA, FBI, and DoJ were involved in an attempted coup against a sitting president?  Did the president need to use the IRS really to target his political enemy the Tea Party?

Shouldn’t we repeal the Patriot act? What were we thinking when we passed FISA? Do you believe Homeland Security really needed to purchase billions of bullets all at once? Should your local police really acquire armored personnel carriers? Do local police need hand me downs from the military… really? Should the Head of the Department of Justice be in contempt of Congress for following the law Congress passed?

Is it even possible to even have a country that has no borders? Can the rule of law stand when we allow sanctuary instead of going through the process of changing our law? Do you really believe that everyone should have the right to vote regardless of whether they are a citizen? What is the consequence of allowing people to vote in elections whether or not they are a resident? Have you ever wondered if it would be different if you had to show that you paid your taxes before you could vote?

Conclusion:

It matters not at all what your political persuasion may be. Donkeys and elephants alike are equally guilty of trampling our rights. There is a lot going on that is hard to understand. It can be confusing and frustrating to sort it out. The media is telling us stories. It is not reporting news. We are going to have to decide whether we value freedom.
