The US Supreme Court has overturned a 9th Circuit Court Ruling on indefinite detention of Criminal illegal aliens. Illegal “immigrants with criminal records can be detained and held indefinitely while they await deportation proceedings.”
In the 5-4 decision, the high court overruled the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which decided in 2016 that immigrants with criminal records can only be detained by federal authorities if the detention occurs soon after he or she is released from jail…”
The majority noted that four other circuit courts disagreed with the 9th. The majority also agreed that the plain text of the law supports indefinite detentions (until deportation) for certain crimes.
I have not read the law so I can’t speak to that. And indefinite detention has a terrible ring to it. But we are talking about illegal entrants guilty of certain crimes in this country being held until they can be deported.
Speeding up the deportation process would ideally be the best course for ensuring a more expeditious release.
And liberals don’t like it.
That counts for something.
