Nikki Haley is resigning as our ambassador to the UN. Probably the best one we’ve had in my lifetime. And depending on who you believe this was something Mr. Trump knew about six months ago or it’s a surprise to everyone.
It can certainly be both.
Trump tells reporter Haley told him about 6 months ago that at end of two year period she'd want to take a break. “She’s done a fantastic job and we’ve done a fantastic job together” via @justinsink

HotAir shares some other ideas about why she is departing the post, if you like that sort of thing (and we do) including the regular two-year turnover typical to positions like say, Attorney General.
An alternate, more direct theory, is that Trump has lined up Haley herself to replace Sessions as AG. But Haley isn’t a hardcore Trump loyalist, so why would he trust her with the Russiagate probe? (Also, Graham has sworn up and down that he doesn’t want the AG job, for understandable reasons given Sessions’ fate.)
I think Sessions will be moving on, but I’m not (yet) convinced Graham would replace Sessions or Haley, Graham. Having had a job or two where everyone around you is (more or less) a soul-sucking drag I can tell you that there is a limit to the number of days you can get out of bed and force yourself suffer that sort of arrangement.
While I’m sure she won’t waste the experience or the political capital it makes sense that she wants to get the heck out of dodge for a breather. Even a short one.
Where she lands remains a mystery but as she winds down her term as Ambassador Haley, I’d like to offer my thanks for standing up to the globalists and elites and wading in rhetorical guns blazing day after day to promote America’s interests in a place that exists to live off our prosperity while hating us for having it in the first place.
