St. Paul Minnesota’s liberal mayor (Melvin Carter) has decided that there is no money in the budget for fireworks on the 4th of July.
As I’ve considered the budgetary priorities we manage across our city in the first year of my administration, I’ve decided I can’t in good conscience support spending tax dollars on a fireworks display in Saint Paul this year.
The Mayor did find $205,000.00 for a week-long inaugural party. Yes, most of that has been covered by donors. But the Mayor had offers from private donors to pay for the fireworks and turned them down. Why?
St. Paul celebrated Somali week which runs from June 30th to July 7th. That event kicks off on June 30th because that is Somali independence day. The week-long event has a lot of sponsors including groups like Planned Parenthood (just as an example).
Planned Parenthood in Minnesota was getting close to 5 million a year in taxpayer dollars back in 2010. In 2011 they built a 46,000 square foot 16 million dollar facility right there in St. Paul.
Are the odds are good that in 2018 PP MN is getting more than 5 Mill. Any thoughts on how much of that ends up in St. Paul? More than 100,000.00? I’d bet money on it.
So it’s not about the money because the mayor of St Paul can’t even take $100,000.00 from a private donor to pay for a 4th of July fireworks display.
What’s his real problem?
Well, this is the same guy who is rumored to have said the 4th celebrates America’s racist past. It’s not an uncommon notion among the left.
I did confirm that he called the National Anthem and Ode to Slavery.
Debate the finer points all you on either point but St. Paul’s mayor sounds like a typical liberal who lavishes himself with week-long inaugural celebrations but suddenly can’t be bothered to display fireworks in his city even when they are paid for by someone else.
Sounds like the stereotypical ruling class socialist Democrat. Hey, I’m doing the people’s work here. Don’t burden me with your petty concerns about hypocrisy.
Thankfully, the best way you deal with them is how America got so far along in the first place. You do it your damn self.
The St. Paul Saints (the local professional baseball team) will hold the fireworks display (they were already willing to pay for) after their 4th of July Game.
And maybe that’s better for everyone after all.
Happy 4th of July!
