Blogline of the Day – When the job is a critical one

“The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works — whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified.” – President Obama, Inauguration (2009)

YOU HAD ONE JOB: IRS payment site crashes hours before Tax Day filing deadline.

(H/T: Instapundit)

Government is really good at two things – taking money from some and then writing checks in giving it to others.  It’s also very good at the writing the checks even as not enough money comes in.  On the day that all the procrastinators decide to file and PAY THEIR MONEY, and the IRS’s DIRECT PAY site goes down, it’s clear that we all know the answer to that “whether it works” has been answered.

Now, the IRS has given them another day to pay – seems logical in the “we broke it, we have to fix it” kind of way.  The problem is, does the Secretary of the Treasury, Steve Mnuchin (boss of the  IRS) have the power to overrule the law that sets April 15th (or like today, the 17th, because of the DC holiday)?

‘Course, the other question is whether all those people will remember this next year?
