Schumer Shutdown – Chuckie Schumer blinks, reads polls, take that long dive into political “Cave in”

white flagAnd the Democrat Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer (D/Progressive – NY) has just caved into to the person that the Democrats believe is the stupidest person in the world: President Donald Trump.  How does that even work that the stupid guy won – and won easily yet again?

Methinks is that he doesn’t back down, he doesn’t give in, doesn’t give up and, like the NE Patriots yesterday, finds a way to win. Very unRepublican of him, isn’t it, to simply stiffen his spine and tell the Democrats to go pound sand and then mean what he says?

He simply stood his ground.

He knew before it started that Americans want a government before they want illegals legalized.  Democrats chose the ready-for-the-glue factory horsey and rode themselves into the political cave in (“…the ole’ grey mare just ain’t what it used to be, ain’t what it used to be, ain’t what it used to be.  The ole grey tactics ain’t what they used to be…)

From The Hill:

McConnell early Monday promised to take up an immigration bill that would protect an estimated 800,000 Dreamers from deportation, under an open amendment process, if Democrats would agree to end the government shutdown.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y) said that pledge was enough for his caucus to accept a three-week government funding bill, which is now set to pass at noon.

“After several discussions, offers, and counteroffers, the Republican leader and I have come to an arrangement. We will vote today to reopen the government to continue negotiating a global agreement,” Schumer said.

If lawmakers aren’t able to get an immigration bill as part of that larger agreement by Feb. 8, the Senate would then take up a separate bill and “the process will be neutral and fair to all sides,” Schumer added.

What’s the over/under that with that last bit actually happening?  I’m betting that DACA is off the table for the next CR (yeah, I HATE the CR process and I lay this at the Repubs feet although the Democrats DO and have filibustered “regular order”; that said, Trump is jumping for joy!  He knows that the American people, while being in favor of DACA, poll badly over DACA being more important that the Feds being shutdown.  Trump got exactly what he wanted and so did the conservative / The Rule of Law CongressCritters (and me – except losing a goodly number of ‘non-essentials”; I guess the DACA adults now know THEY are non-essentials to the Democrats, though).

And Trump gets The Wall.  Democrats got bupkiss.

And what the Republicans should NOT forget come Feb 8th when we’ll most likely go through this yet again (H/T: IBD)(reformatted, emphasis mine):

Take a look at what happened after the 21-day shutdown that went from December 5, 1995 until January 6, 1996. It was said at the time to be calamitous for then House Speaker Newt Gingrich and the Republican party, and has been described as such ever since.

…Clinton did win reelection in 1996, but exit polls at the time showed that his victory was overwhelmingly due to the booming economy — not to mention that Republicans nominated a terribly weak candidate in Bob Dole. Even then, Clinton managed to only secure 49.2% of the vote. Meanwhile, Republicans in the House lost only two seats that year — and thereby retained their majority for the first time since 1928. And the GOP gained two seats in the Senate.

What about the 16-day shutdown in 2013, orchestrated by Sen. Ted Cruz in an attempt to block ObamaCare from going into effect…But a little over a year later, Republicans won a sweeping midterm election victory. The party won the Senate majority for the first time in eight years with a net gain of nine seats. In the House, the GOP gained 13 seats, giving it the biggest GOP majority since 1928.

Most likely, voters will have long since forgotten this kerfuffle by November, unless, that is, Republicans give up too much to reopen the government and end up alienating their base.

Even though news of an overwhelming Blue Wave is starting to abate, the Rs are still tagged with not upholding their number one promise over the last 8 years – repealing Obamacare.  Getting tax reform helps but the vast majority of Conservatives want this idiotic create-more-Democrat-voters-by-importing-them to stop.  Yes, the Individual Mandate is gone but illegal immigration is an animating topic for Rs – screw this up and you will see them animate to their couches with butts over hands come November 8th.

Washington Times:  The vote to end the filibuster was 81-18, clearing the way for passage of the stopgap spending bill.  Guess who turned tail, dropped their “Principles” and voted for it?  Yep – Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie “The Red” Hassan:

New Hampshire: Hassan (D-NH), Yea Shaheen (D-NH), Yea

I do need to put up more of their political emails saying how stupid Trump is and how horrible he is.  How much stupider do they feel now that such a stupid person just handed their butts to them?
