Blogline of the Day: Freedom – a redefinition

This is the line I paraphrased this morning on GrokTALK! – from Instapundit:

ANNA MUSSMAN: How Our New Definition Of Freedom Causes Cruelty: In the past, freedom meant to ability to obey one’s beliefs. Now, freedom is the ability to require others to obey one’s own beliefs about oneself.

And that encapsulates much of the essence of Political Correctness -submission (which is the meaning of Islam: “submission”). You gonna let the PCers continue to roll over you?  Several of the collegiate administrators that quit would still have their jobs if they had grown a pair and acted like BU’s former head honcho, John “the one armed bandit” Silber who was there as I was an undergrad and grad student:

Then they put up the shacks. I told the police, “Go ask them three questions: Do you have

a title to the property? (They built them on our property, not theirs.) Do you have a building permit? We have to have building permits. Have you got a clearance with the historical commission, because this is a historical district? If the answer is no to those three questions, then you tell them, ‘We’ll give you about 15 minutes to remove your shanty. And if you don’t, you’ll be arrested.’ ” I said, “Now, none of them are going to remove their shanty, so you’re going to have to arrest them. But I want you to be very gentle, and I want you to take them to the paddy wagon singing, ‘It’s just a shanty in old shanty town.’ ” Because one point I want to get across to these students is, I do not take them seriously. This is not some very deeply felt, high moral cause on their part; this is showboating of a very insincere kind by most of these students, and I want them to understand that I see through their pretensions.

After all, what we are seeing now is the asylums being taken over by the crazies who believe they know more than their professors. And why not – they been indoctrinated for years in that heap of garbage that they are the centers of everyone else’s Universe (here, here).  Going to college is just that next plateau of self-indulgence when you just don’t expect but DEMAND that others kow-tow to you and failing that they do, revisit Mao’s Cultural Revolution and basically institute micro-reeducation camps for their professors.  Those poor souls (in which many are complicit in fostering this attitude and are horrified it is turning on them!) are now suffering under the seeds they sowed and are reaping the academic equivalent of what 10s of millions of Chinese (and Russians) ended up as – dead.

Problem and question is, will this turn out to be just a fad and die on its own?  Or will it burst out like the Ebola virus did and take millions (and Freedom) with it?  It fits and extends the Progressives philosophy of FDR’s Second Bill of Rights – the Right to be free from need.

Even at the totalitarianism of Freedom taken from your friends, neighbors, strangers – and family?
