First it was “A New Ice Age” back in the 70’s. Then it became “Global Warming”, then “Climate Change” (i.e., “we’ll hedge our bet both ways”). Now I’m starting to hear / see “Climate Disruption”. Methinks that will be a really bad move. Why?
Warming – slow, gradual process. Change – more variable, ups and downs and more extreme than the connotation of “Warming”. But Disruption? Now THERE’S a word for you! As poll after poll shows that the general public really doesn’t care much, usually ranking near the bottom of the majority of issues important to them. Disruption – well! That connotes a feeling of immanent, sudden, and VIOLENT (even as violent storms here in the US like tornado and hurricane frequency has been down). We’ve been told for decades that weather is going to get worse and worse quickly (yeah, notice the delta between what’s said and what reality has been) – but “WE” aren’t listening.
So, the move to Disruption. Silly creatures – why are they following on the heels of the Progressives / Liberals / Progressives / Pragmatists (e.g., they’re all Socialists) that keep “burning” out the meaning of their own chosen labels? After all, all that the Left Politicos have done is to try to hide their spots – they are Statist Command-and-Control types in their heart of hearts. That’s what they love – control over others – and no changing of their labels cover their actions.
I guess the Watermelon Environmentalists want to do the same with their labels – because what they say is not what has happened.
