Actually, the official designation is US Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) for “Independent” but he certainly caucuses with the Democrats. However, this from Town Hall reminds us what he truly is, on this day that he announced that he is running for the Presidency of the United States (emphasis mine):
“I am a socialist and everyone knows that,” Sanders said, responding to an ad that tried to link him to the regime of Fidel Castro.
He continued: “They also understand that my kind of democratic socialism has nothing to do with authoritarian communism.”
Well, if he is to the Left of both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, and both of them have declared by words and deeds that they believe Government should determine your conscience and religion (e.g., his HHS’ individual mandate that abortifacients should trump one’s conscience and Hillary’s “And deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed.”), I am very leery of his distinction between the two. Given the trend we have seen the last few years, that tipping point won’t have far to go.
