I thought the whole of idea of “being inside” was not having to dress like “being outside”?

Skip In Air Force Snorkal ParkaOnce again at TreeHugger is the notion that all advances in our standard of living should be sacrificed at the Altar of GAIA.  What’s so bad about wearing a few layers of outdoor clothes on as you sit on your favorite indoor couch to save a few ergs of energy:

Super-insulated clothing could let you skip indoor heating

Wearing extra layers inside is one of the easiest things you can do to reduce energy consumption during the winter, which both helps the planet and saves you money. We’ve brought you some great low-tech ways in the past to stay warm while keeping the heat set low, but a new high tech solution could help us all to warm up while using less energy. Researchers at Stanford University have figured out a way to apply a silver nanowire coating to fabrics to make them super insulating, cutting down or even cutting out the need for indoor heating when worn.

The researchers say that the main advantage of the nanowire-coated clothing is that it reflects over 90% of a person’s body heat back to the person. In comparison, a very warm wool sweater only reflects back about 20% of body heat.

You know, even with my passive solar house, I use a Vermont Castings wood stove and propane furnace for backing that up.  Yeah, not cheap at times (like the -19 degrees F a few days ago) but it would have to be FAR worse for me to want to don a parka to stay warm.  The whole idea of being indoors is so that you are NOT outdoors – and outdoor cold temperatures are a part of it. I LIKE being able to walk around in a T-shirt and jeans and not have to shiver Yet, to this Greenie, Megan Treacy, it seems to be a wanted way of life.  More power to ya, dear – oh wait!

Would that be wishing you LESS power, ma’am?  Is that more goodness?

Which begs the question – why bother having an indoors at all, then?
