A Message to the Ayotte “I told You So” Crowd

Many of us objected to Senator Ayotte’s vote to break a filibuster on gun control.  Now that the measure is dead in the Senate, and Senator Ayotte voted to kill it, and Obama is mad as hell, the folks who thought we were overreacting, are all “well SEE!?”

To these folks I submit the following:  It is not in our nature to lay down and just hope elected officials do the right thing…eventually.  And if you are honest about the way politics works, or the state of a nation that is filled with far too many people who have just been waiting for their elected officials to do the right thing, then you’ll know we are right to be suspicious.  You’ll know that the Constitution presumes that the government and people in power are not to be trusted, and that the people who loaned them that power must be ever vigilant.  You will accept the fact that more than a few politicians from New Hampshire have headed off to Washington on one set of wings and returned on another.

You will know why we prefer to stand our ground, rather than run away and hope for the best.

You were not right, you were lucky.  Next time you might be neither.
