A timely post by Marc Thiessen over at The Enterprise Blog has the list. Given that Ron Paul (and a few other Republican nominee candidates for Prez) are saying "Bring them all home"), the question is "how many are there really"?
Here’s the count (reformated):
| Belgium | 1,234 | Bahrain | 1,894 | |
| Germany | 54,198 | Diego Garcia (UK) | 286 | |
| Greece | 378 | Egypt | 273 | |
| Italy | 10,771 | Qatar | 678 | |
| Netherlands | 433 | Saudi Arabia | 435 | |
| Portugal | 731 | Djibouti | 334 | |
| Spain | 1,483 | Honduras | 358 | |
| Turkey | 1,511 | Cuba (Guantanamo Bay) | 881 | |
| United Kingdom | 9,436 | Soviet Union | 164 | |
| Australia | 178 | Canada | 131 | |
| Japan | 40,178 | Greenland | 135 | |
| Philippines | 182 | Singapore | 157 | |
| Thailand | 162 | United Arab Emirates | 140 | |
| Korea | 35 – 65,000 | Uganda | 100 |
Add to that (perhaps already mixed in?) are the approximate 900 Marines that make up the Marine Security Guard Battalion deployed overseas; their mission is to protect our embassies all over the world.
Take out Korea, Germany, Japan, Italy, and the UK, and there really are not all that many deployed (and yes, this ignores the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan).
