GraniteGrok has been fortunate to be asked to participate EARLY during WGIR’s Morning Show – usually around 6:08 am. My gosh, that’s WELL before that 1/2 can of Mt. Dew consumed has actually hit the brain, so if I sound a bit ditzy, well, I am.
Anyways, I always try to give the host (usually Jeff Chidester, this week Justin McIsaac) a number of topics from which to choose (culled from the posts I collect from surfing). Here’s one from Instapundit with my thought of "is this REALLY what the Founders thought that the Federal Government should be doing?"
BEYOND PARODY: The Obama administration’s latest effort to stem sexual abuse on college campuses borrows heavily from the onetime iPhone slogan: "there’s an app for that."
"Today the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, with the Department of Health and Human Services, announced a contest to develop a smartphone app to help students better protect themselves in risky situations. The effort is dubbed Apps Against Abuse. . . . The competition calls for developers to build an app that lets women designate friends or emergency contacts and check in with them during at-risk situations. The app would also provide fast access to information and resources for dealing with sexual assault or dating violence."
OK, let me see if I have this straight. If I was a woman, and I’m really in an at-risk situation, is the (presumably) male going to allow me time to actually yank the phone out, start an app, and then fiddle with it while he just stands there?
Or has commonsense, which would preclude me from actually getting myself into such a jam in the first place, become that rare that only the above is seen a rational philosophy and an actual solution? If I REALLY thought that there was a chance to be in danger, would I want to really rely on technology in this fashion?
Don’t get me wrong – I like tech! This is like "if it is too good to be true…" with your personal well being. And given ALL of the other things going on like the debt crisis, WHY are we spending money on stuff that will just give a false sense of security?
